Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 preview: Starting over

09 August 2012
Taking a second to think can result in second thoughts. In the Galaxy 10.1 Note's case it resulted in a second pair of CPU cores and double the RAM - a lethal combination, which only a select few of its foes dare stand against. This is in case you are wondering...

Anonymous, 10 Aug 2012too bad, it uses propietary port. i was hoping that this n... moreIt has a tablet battery, charging that on a USB-port or with your standard USB charger, will take forever when the device it turned off, and might not even be possible when its turned on (the discharge might be bigger than the charge).

I would much prefer one or two full sized USB-ports, and a full sized HDMI port + a charger port, on a tablet. Just put them in a bulge at the top, where a better camera and better speakers are placed. And the tablet will have a nice angle when in a flat surface. Win-Win with a small small loss in thickness at the thickes point, but made up for on the rest that can be made thinner.

Micro HDMI or micro USB to HDMI ports are not that much better than propriatary ones, not many people have those adaptors at home. Full size HDMI is the way to go. But I think they can keep the price down with a propriatary connector cause they can cut licensing fees out of the price of the tablet, and add it only to the connector. But HDMI out on a tablet, and it might actually be used as a Media device, No HDMI port but only adapter connectors, and it probably will never by most, and supporting it only adds unecessary costs in the first place, I would say a bad move.
Full sized USB-ports and we will start to see some more drivers arrive for android, for USB soundcards, special printer drivers, ans so on + People would be very excited for the opportunity to connect pendrives and such, most people dont realise they can do that with USB-otg support on their phones and tablets, with micro-USB, they dont even realise... with a full sized USB, I think most would try to connect it, without even knowing it would work.

On a phone micro-USB with video out and USB-otg support is the best choice. Or next best choice with todays smartphones getting larger capacity in the batteries, its about time for quick chargers again, and we would be in the very confusing situation with micro USB on tablets, people not getting why it wont charge properly with a computer or their other USB-chargers.
But if it could be charged in both ways, and the qucik charger port was standard as well the confusion would be sorted out.

Anonymous, 16 Aug 2012Going to Windows device and got even crappier on updates..?... moreWith WP8/Win8 RT/Win8 Pro, the situation will probably be a bit better in terms of updates.
Really dont get why they even put WP 7 out there. And WP8 must have been what they pitched to Nokia to make the switch.

On the other hand, what are updates good for, anymore?
Before 2.2 any update was crucial.
After ICS, you even have proper multitasking, necessary in a tablet, but many people dont care about it on their phones (I do, however).
Jely Bean, doesnt dring along a lot of things... the personal assistant is overrated, voice-dialing has been around on android for a while.

Sure every new version comes with a bit updated look, and one or two nice features, but nowadays its mostly bling bling kind of features, the crucial smartphone elements that Android was missing is there now. WP8, isnt far behind, but still lacks a couple, but lets hope those will be the kind of updates that all WP8 devices can handle, they sure doesnt require more performance than minimum WP8 requierements... lets hope MS thinks service packs, rather than OS updates, for a while. Google though, OS updades, and did not impelent a practical way to update without reinstallation, not a good move.OS updates also means that new fancy features has to be instroduced, and makes it less likely that manufactors wants to put the new features in their old phones, as they want them as selling arguments for new phones.. and the all so important basic features upgrades that came with the OS as reserved only for new devices.
Apple mixed and matched a bit, some basic features make it on to older devices, some does not, some new fancy features makes in on to old devices, some does not or in a very restricted way.

AnonD-66999, 16 Aug 2012Proprietary 30-pin connector for charging and connectivity,... moreFor charging, as special connector really is requiered, since USB would take forever, and not even sure it would charge faster than it discharges while the device is on.
So forget using any of you other adapter for charging a tablet, even if it has USB-micro port for charging, using anything but the supplied charger is hopeless.
But the port doesnt really have to be much bigger than the old Nokia charging plug, I mean the small one.

Actually on a tablet, I would say USB full sized in part at the top which is thicker than the rest, and that contains better camera, better speakers, and so on. And full sized HDMI as well. And in this case, the stylus. It would even give the device a nice angle when used on a desk, and make it a litle less likely to slip out of your lap. And if made in a smart way, it even offers a good way to hold it in portrait mode, and a way to carry it vertically.
But I guess engineers and the ergonomical team is not alowed in the room, when the "fancy designers" and marketing decides how it will best stand up against its competitors when size and design is considered.

Anonymous, 15 Aug 2012If samsung was like you, they would NEVER be able to releas... moreWell not true at all.
They waited so long with this already... Really it should have been out at the latest when the S3 arrived, same CPU/GPU. Or earlier with the old chipset, but that really didnt perform as well as Samsung hoped for.
But they did the redesign, and they were already working on the Exynos 5.

Quad exynos 4 means no LTE support.
Quad Exynos 4 means they couldnt really go for a full HD screen.
Quad Exynos 4 means less performance for the same watt.
And those are three drawbacks of this device. Either there will be a snapdragon version in a month or two for the LTE support, or there will be an Exynos 5 version, and that Exynos 5 version would be the one to get, despite the lack of Full HD.

THey waited quite a few months to make the redesign of this, just a couple more would mean a much better device.
And sure, my laptop is 1280x800, and at 12 inches, and that is pretty good, but nowadays, its all about resolution, and it does have its advantages, when cpu/gpu can handle it. Sure full HD gaming on the New Dual Exynos 5, might not be as good as 720p gaming on Quad Exynos 4, but on a creative device like this, working with pictures and graphics means that its a strong advantage in situations that the cpu/gpu will offer the performance.

shame on you!, 12 Aug 2012well i go t a nexs7 because what we do at the end? check em... moreI take a lot of notes, and make small sketches... I want them sorted in digital, rather than the analog system that you have with pen and paper.
Sure I have the HP TM2 convertible laptop, but its bigger, heavier than a tablet like this... and it runs hotter.
SO note-taking is on my wushlist in a tablet.

Surf the web, sure, but its nice to have a stylus to click links and such, but not as important on 10.1 inch as it is on the Note 5.3.
THe bigger screen is nice for surfing, but the bigger screen and the fact that it weights more, means both plus and minus.

For games and such, I actually think this packs more power. But weights more and its bigger. So both plus and minus on that.

Micro SD-slot is a big plus for this.
HDMI port support well, perhaps, but it require a special adapter (but so does micro HDMI, and I have no other devices with that)
One big and one small plus for this.

Cameras on tablets are not really for picture-taking.
Its for picture notes, especially when combined with S-Pen.
                            Its for Augumented Reality.
So big plusses there for this one.

GSM voice support, and built in modem.
Two big plusses for this, again.. sure, you can argue who will use their tablet as a phone, but its pretty good to have the option, and with devices like smart-wathces that can control your device, voice dial support in headsets, speaker phone cabability and Bluetooth headset connectivity, actually means this could be in your bag, while you use it as a phone.
And the built in modem, well, there can be no doubt that its very good to have.

Dont know if the USB-otg support is confirmed for Nexu 7, but lets assume, well, its better than having a special connector as on this, you probably will have use for the adapter for other devices that you have or will get in the future, and the price is much lower.
Unfortunately USB otg support does not make up for MicroSD slot, as its annoying to have a dongle, and I dont know if the suports for apps to use it as storage is always there.

The price, well, Nexus 7 is quite a bit cheaper, at least if you are in the states.
THe price of this will probably go down faster, due to higher margins. And the price will proably be below list price when it arrives in your store.

for me, Nexus 7 has too many disadvantages, sure, it creates a problem for other tablets, as it makes them seem a bit expensive for what you get, but the Nexus 7 is just too much of a compromise. Sure it will go on and sell a lot, and that both good and bad, for some buyers, the compromises will kind of turn them off tablets. But the support for tablet apps will increase in play store. And Android will be seen as a serious tablet platform. In the end, probably on the plus side, but it does damage to the android tablet market as well, as mentioned when compared to other devices, and with so many restrictions, many of them will end up on the shelf at home pretty soon.

What is the best buy for you, well that is up to you.
But if note-taking, picture notes, GSM calling, and modems and SD micro card was all included in the Nexus 7 for not that much higher price I would certainly go for that. But when compared to the Note, it misses out on a lot of things that I expect a tablet to have. And dont even mention those capacitive styluses, they are really bad only a finger replacement and not a pen input device, and turn people off styluses for tablets, when a active stylus like this ir very usable and practical.

What I want a tablet for.
                            *Note-taking
pen and picture, and word compatible
*Connecting to the web on the go and at home (I do have a mifi router however, but they use more battery as they require wifi, and the mifi itself has limited battery life).
*Music playback local and streamed (of offline spotify, localy saved files and of my network at home)
                            *Read documents and PDF

                            to a lesser extent
                            Play games
                            Watch videos
                            Augumented reality
                            GPS navigation/Offline map navigation

And when it comes to calls, I dont know yet, depends on what other devices I will have in the future, and how often I wil carry this with me... Had it been a 7.7 Amoled version, it would probably be my primary calling device as well.

For my needs, Nexus 7 is pretty much just a toy. A bit expensive, there are even cheaper tablets, with lot of less processing power that would meat my needs better, with calling and micro SD card-slots.
