Motorola new RAZR family hands-on: First look

05 September 2012
Motorola treated us to three new members of the RAZR family – the Motorola RAZR M mid-ranger, the Motorola RAZR HD flagship and the Motorola RAZR HD MAXX battery life champion. The first two of those will be available both as global GSM devices and on the Verizon network, while the RAZR HD MAXX will initially be exclusively available as a part of the Verizon DROID family.

AnonD-58797, 08 Sep 2012Google waisted there money buying this dead company, Motoro... moreWhat a useless comment. If you saw the press conference they were very clear on why they purchased Motorola.

You might like Samsung with crappy screen, either insanely over staurated, too dim or too low resolution. Cheap shit plastic etc. Perhaps you like Apple, who makes phones designed to break with ease. Not to mention Exynos. Sure SIII outperforms Tegra 3 slightly in synthetic benchmarks, but Tegra 3 supports more games and gives better graphics in games such as Dead trigger and alike. Snapdragon also have their games store.

How about Sony which never offers any particular value for money? Their Xperia Active which breaks easiest of all tough phones? Boring plastic builds?

HTC's thick phones without SD slots, small batteries and general boredom in design. Tempting?

I'll stick to Motorola, the king of battery power - now also in mid-rangers - build quality, docks and special features (Webtop, smart actions, MotoCast) etc.

Just because they don't market themselves as much as the others right now, doesn't mean they don't make better phones. The new management and owner just needs to spend more on marketing to actually tell people about their amazing phones, otherwise they won't sell as much as the inferior ones.

The Razr M looks great. Finally, there is a phone that can beat the iPhone design.

Hello, i was waiting for the RAZR HD since a while, and i am a little bit disappointed. It just fill the gap from S3 or One X, but no killing feature. Moto is 6 month late, for this kind of phone, if it want to play with the bigs.
Even the design is a disapointement : the Razr look better for me.
+ no date for the availability, no information for Europ (i am in France). It feel Motorola fail this announcement.

Only one close to the standard RAZR HD's battery is the Optimus 4x. But with TFT screen and aged CPU on higher nm - both consuming much more power than Krait and SAMOLED. As well as no Smart actions from LG.

So I'm sure the RAZR HD will last very long with high use :)

I have owned a sony xperia s and now i have samsung s3 and i can confirm that for daily usage and normal usage it wasn't mush of a difference in speed and smoothness. So the cpu in the new droid lineup should be fine even for next september and future releases from android software. The biggest issue is that this phone is not available in Europe. Lots of customers left out of the circle.....

And I remember well that it took long for the MAXX to appear on sale (or even the Droid Pro I once fancied) here - so long, that it's been technically outdated when it finally happened.

Sony's offerings concerning cam quality didn't look to well when one examines the actual images their mobiles deliver.
All the marketing blah-blah and great names (Exmor, BSI) and numbers (12+ MPx) didn't help in generating better images than typical HTC 8 MPx cams.
No, Nokia (with their Symbian phones only, though) Apple, Samsung are leading the way here.

Battery time is the most common limitation on modern smartphones. Thus, the choice to equip even the midrange model RAZR M with a decent 2000 mAh Li-Ion pack and the standard RAZR HD with a generous 2530 mAh one, while still keeping the phone well below 9 mm thickness (rather: thinness) seems a very sensible move to me.
On the other hand, with only 0.7 mm more for the RAZR HD MAXX, I'd know what I would want to purchase...

... alas, if I only could, because not selling the MAXX overseas is, well, ... stupid. Sorry, but that's the biggest advantage this phone has. Why don't capitalize on it? Perhaps Motorola can't afford to deliver huge quantities of that model? I can only guess.

And, we'd need to wait to see what the actual quality of the pictures taken by the new RAZRs will be. I don't think I remember reading anywhere that it'll be a different cam unit from what we had in the previous line-up.
