Nokia Lumia 920 review: The Luminary

04 December 2012
Not the best of times then for the Finns, but the right time for a flagship to show its worth. Saying that the future of the company is being decided here is probably too much. But the Lumia 920 could be the difference between living with dignity and scratching a living on emerging markets...

u use ur same s3 for next ten years by changing the batteries.

And Nokia 920 too is the persistence of that commitment to make toughest phones in the world. Found a drop, hammer, keys and knife test for it here: http://9gag.com/gag/6004447

I must say lumia 920 is next 3310 in reliability.

Qki, 06 Dec 20121a) come to Poland in november and leave at march, to under... moreThats a very long post with so much false info that is just your own opinion. For example pocket friendly, yes S3 is pocket friendly, and so is Note/Note2. Several times i been in the gym i jumped skip-rope 200 before i remembered the Note 2 was in my pocket. Its so slim that it disappears. For sure the 920 does not, its insanely thick, and heavier, yet it has a small display and a microscopic battery.

What winter phone is it you talking about? You have an N9, right? Worst winter phone ever, the battery will last just a few hours. I dont think you care at all about winter use, you just want to talk. I had a N9 myself and even on mild winter days when the temp was above 0c it was useless outdoors. The tests vs the N9 showed that S3 excelled in cold climate, strange you dont have S3 if winter is so important for you.

Anyway, i came here to say that the photo quality of the 920 is disappointing, it does not beat the S3 and Note 2, in fact on the comparison charts it is weaker than samsungs 8mpix. Look at the eyebrows of the girl in the grey-chart, thats really bad quality compared to S3. So for sure this is not a camera phone, and its not a video phone since it has no expandable storage. I dont have many minutes of full HD videos shot on my Note 2 but the internal memory is already full. Sure the 920 has almost 3 times more available internal storage but thats still not enough, 32GB is a serious limitation.

I might get a 920 anyway, since i can get it for around $150 sim free. I wanna use it myself so i dont get fed with MS propaganda like this. I already have note 2 and everything good they said about it was true, and none of the bad things were true, its perfect, and i can afford to spend $150 to see for myself that Bezelbub 920 isnt.

advice, 06 Dec 2012from your post i can tell that u are a die hard nokia fan w... more1a) come to Poland in november and leave at march, to understand a meaning of word "sometimes". Than again, try use your SGSIII or iP5 in -20Celcius (average february).
1b) There are creatures living on Earth called WOMAN. About 50% of them like to have long fingernails. And I ROTFL anytime i see them using capacitive touchscreen.
1c) Go to your bank account site and login without zooming in and out. imposible in my case, every letter need to be input in seperate textfield. zoom in : choose a field, type a letter. Zoom out (or pan) find other field, zoom in... Taking a pen out of yr pocket to point the fields directly - much easier. I know, cos i used n900 (resistive screen and a stylus) now i use n9 (capacitive screen) but same problems with other capacitive screen phones.

              2. U complain about screen size, i complain about resolution. Competitors cannot do bigger resolution so they cover it with size.

3a) Oh Yeah, SGS3 and Note is really pocket friendly :>
              3b) U couldnt be more wrong :>
With 1280x768 the 4,5 screen is actually bigger than 5'' of 1280x720:>
              L920 screen is 4,29''x2,57 which gives 11,03square''
              5''of 1280x720 is 4,36x2,45 which gives 10,68square''
But i bet Pythagorean theorem is a mystery for u isn't it?
And I agree, that office editing, movie watching, web browsing and book reading is much more comfortable on bigger screen.

              4. For now, there is no difference. cos no software can utilize it. Wait for software than we see.

              5. call it bulky. I like it more, than a design of sgsIII which looks cheap

              6. u mean u never dropped ur phone? if u dit, take a look what will happen with sgsIII on android auythority clip u can find on youtube

              7. as i said i agree with aps count still low

              8. just w8 for a fix

              9. Yes i do. It means i will never break my usb/charger port, when accidently throw my phone from my desk. I'm careless person and i do it very often.

              10. Name the FREE nav app working offline on google/iOS, than i agree with u

              11. MS Office 4 3 to be more precise, ok? Don't tell me that any other office suite is better - its not

              Cons:
              1. I understand u dont have vibrations in ur SGSIII, right? and u have perfectly quiet car so u could hear all sound imperfections, right?

              2. as i said - true, but not "very". Not heavier than n900, which my wife uses and my 9months daughter often cover with saliva.

              3. Why? It is not samsung which forgots about its phones 6 months after realase (not including flagship to be honest)

              5. i had three premium phones n95, n900 and n9 (which also doesnt have removable batt) and NEVER felt the need to replace a battery. I have 300 ppl working in my company and not a single one of them ever replaced a battery in their phones. So, whats a big issue? At work u have easy acces to juice, in car u can use car charger in plane and train u can ask the crew to charge up ur phone. Even on camping u usually not go on foot but u travel there with ur car which... can use a charger. ANd i never travelled with public transport longer than 40 hours, so its not issue either.

              6. never used it - commercial stations plays pop crap, which i dont listen to. Besides ppl invented online stations which works great everywhere i go.

              7. 32GB of storage is enough (even if half is used by OS)

              8. just w8 for an app

              9. and what r they for?

              10. but live tiles, which have actuall use

Well, i'm die hard nokia fan - thats good guess
I used symbian in n95, but than maemo - n900, now meego n9. So plz, dont tell me enything about pros of android, which took 3 years to adopt true multitasking or "chat" sms display, which were in meego in 2009, ok? Dont tell me about android advantages. Customisation? LOL:D U call a live wallpaper a customization? JOKE. Try a different shell like u can do in maemo to understand what customization means, and than talk. On OC n900 i had anroid installed so i could play Angry birds which was not available on n900 (sadly). So i know the system is crap. It is slow, featureless unintuitive sh*t and no manufacturer "cover" will well, cover that. After 6? 7 year of development google didnt came up to idea that OS could be manipulated different way that was shown by apple. So...

great news! i have owned some 10-15 phones in my life (3310, alcatels some-kind-of, se k850i, nokia x6 and e60, htc desire hd and a few more), but still in working condition are se 850i and ALL the nokia ones. if i could only get enough money, to buy 920 :( during last couple of years i have had an opportunity to browse n9, s1, s2, s3, nexus series and now 800 and 900 and i must say that nokia's build quality is almost always top notch. keep it up, nokia. you've got my vote :)

Your beloved fartdroid is a crack copycat and nothing more. A linux based system (i wonder how come Linux:-? Hmmm: Look guys, Nokia did a good job with linux, let's steal the idea, SOME FROM HERE SOME FROM THERE, and there you go, we have a piece of crapp recycled system for the mass!) Some from ios, some from blackberry, lets steal some java codes to. We will go down soon, but at least we will have a sh**load of money from the idiots. Ios being also a palmOS copycat, also allot of Nokia's based cores were stolen to (that is why Apple has to pay 10% of every phone they sell, to Nokia) so the story goes on and on. They copied and stole so much, that right know they don't know who's idea was and who's the copycat. So that's why they sue each-other all the time. Palm, Nokia and BlackBerry should sue them for using their innovations to construct a sh*thole for ignorant's, to throw some money in them. So, you praise some recycled systems that grown on the back of others work and mass ignorance. Now, BEGONE until you learn some history and technology... You already talked to much rubbish.

I've been using this phone for a week now. I always wonder why most people complain that it is heavy. Even a 2-year old baby could lift it up with ease.
The lack of apps compared to Android and iOS is agreed but I have all the apps I need.
If you are complaining of the daylight photos you could check this link where the users are posting their captured photos and videos. And there is a rumor that Nokia is well informed of the issue and an will be fixed in the future update in which they have done with the Lumia 900 before.

Most interesting in this phone is optical image stabilization, which is using the technology from dslr lenses, when lens detect a shake, the lens will move to reduce the blur. This way is very effective to reduce shake or blur. Also with this optical stabilization, lumia 920 is possible th shoot with lower shutter speed in low light using lower iso. This make a cleaner picture compare to the other smartphone like a iphone5 or sgs3.
