Nokia Lumia 920 review: The Luminary

04 December 2012
Not the best of times then for the Finns, but the right time for a flagship to show its worth. Saying that the future of the company is being decided here is probably too much. But the Lumia 920 could be the difference between living with dignity and scratching a living on emerging markets...

AnonD-85996, 05 Dec 2012You're wrong, RKKy. WP8 DOES support file management for al... moreI haven't read any report of a file manager for wp8. But I've read online reports of people downloading unsupported file types onto their phone and not being able to free up the space or use those files later on.

If any of the shops near me had a wp8 device I might have tried it out.

But I guess MS is learning and they'd close the feature gap soon enough. :)
But I'd stick to android till all the issues are sorted out.

I think there needs to be an article about how Nokia's symbian and Microsoft's WM platforms started the whole smartphone revolution. A lot of younger readers (fandroids) are clueless and need to be educated.

Oh and, OBVIOUSLY Android is currently better than WP8 because WP8 is BRAND NEW! If you want to form an informed opinion you need to give it time. We'll all know the potential of this platform by next summer. PATIENCE people...

advice, 05 Dec 2012so after the review ,let's discuss the pros and cons of the... moreWell, lets try again :>
                Pros:
                1. Capacitive touch screen, that works with gloves, pen(cil)s, fingernails etc.
                2. 1280x768 of real pixels, not a poor Pentail crap of SGSIII or sad joke of 640x1136 in iPhone5.
                3. Competitors have larger screen because their are technoligically incapable of build a display with over than 300dpi.
                4. Display with double refresh rate, than competitors
                5. Beautiful design that doesnt look cheap like SGSIII (battery cover bending under the finger (LOL))
                6. Extremaly solid construction - no scratches on body (iPhone), doesnt brake if dropped on the concrete (SGS III) - well, the phone doesnt brake even if hit with wooden plank (see GSMArena Blog)
                7. Windows Phone 8 - fast and smoothly working OS, that doesn't need 16 CPU cores and 8 GB of RAM to not lag
                8. Optical Image Stabilization which kicks a** when its about making videos, and making night/dark/party stills.
                9. Wireless Charging (which competition doesnt have - shame)
                10. Navigation that actually works :) No need for data connection (extremaly importent when abroad) (Crapdroid and iCrap still doesn't have that)
                11. MS Office !

                Ok. Now Cons:
                1. disapointing audio quality (very important, when u travel in a city bus surrounded by crowd :> )
                2. heavy
                3. Problems with image processing software (Nokia allready adressed this issues, and promised and update/fix)
                4. Low app base comparing to competition
                5. moderate battery performance

The question is, with all those pros in mind, who would buy overpriced iCrap or overgrown Iron with touchscreen? Only apple and android fanboys, right?

Is it really necessary to emphasize it is heavier than Note2? 183 vs 185 grams? What about those 50+ grams of protection cover that every Samsung and iPhone needs? And Nokia phones make it through a couple of hard work years without protection just fine.

WP8 DOES support file management for all content you create yourself (Documents, Videos, Photos and so on). Just plug it in via USB, and you're good to go. No Zune/Client needed.

I've had much better results with the camera than this review has shown. PARTICULARILY for indoor/night photography.

It may be N10 .....the next N-series with Windows!!!
that will be the real best Nokia flagship after N95...mark my words....it will turnaround Nokia's fortunes :)

If its not N10, then Nokia will have no option but going with Android, again I have to repeat again the real n the best Android flagship ever will be from Nokia.

PS: In any case beware Samsung, ur fake glory days are nearing to an end...make as much money as possible until the real player enters! :)

I work at orange romania. Today we have received from nokia a prototype for network tests. 12 mp, quadcore. This is all what i can see in 3 minutes because it goes in the hands of our m.f. Bosses. Its case is still ugly, undifined as design. Programmed for march

I guess I'd have to wait for the galaxy S4 for a decent upgrade.

                                      Good review.

After a while, it's rather difficult to differentiate one WP device from another, even if the one in question is a Nokia. In such a scenario, I believe Nokia's standout features need to be heavily and aggressively marketed. This is where Nokia fails, I'm afraid. They need some inspiration from Apple in this regard.

Nice wordings used in the final concluding para :)

everybody is expecting DSLR performance from 920's camera even though I don't see its competition doing much better in day light, not to mention in low light and shaky situations(which the review didn't emphasise that much)...it was obvious that 808 would not loose the crown to soon, but noroid fans expect from nokia to fly them to the moon or something-it is just a phone people and when samsung will sell a phone which will make juice from apples while washing my laundry and vacuums I'll be convinced. the fact is nokia deliverd a worthy opponent, clearly not on everyoanes' taste
