Sony Xperia Z review: Zero hour

17 February 2013
With solid backup in the midrange, returning to the fiercest battle in the mobile market is Sony’s top priority. The Xperia Z, which leads the charge, got us properly impressed in a recent hands-on and if it walks unscathed from a complete review, we’ll know the Japanese have hit the form of their life...

For me after going through the compare tool in GSM arena, the still photo quality seems to be OK and is more or less same or better than other competing flagships. Where I found real problem is in the video quality especially in the ISO chart. The Xperia Z is certainly no match for the galaxy S3, iPhone 5, HTC one X and even the BB Z10! The Xperia Z video looks smudged and even the Xperia SL seems to be better than this brand new highly anticipated flagship.

While I am a Lumia fan with Nokia 920 currently.. Xperia Z is worth praising Sony's effort to pull itself out of shadow and (as mentioned in the review) making competition nervous. While I am not moving away from my current fone I am excited to see what lies ahead in this season.

This will push competitors to design better fones. Sony had inspired once apple for iPhone. Now looks like this fone will be an inspiration again.

I've been lucky enough to play with Xperia ZL for a couple of days. The screen is great, not fantastic, but really great. We have to understand that GSM-arena is VERY picky when it comes to scoring different screens.

              I absolutley loved Xperia ZL.

Also, GSMarenas conclusion is not but a praise really:

"Well yes, we cannot pretend everything about Xperia Z is perfect. The screen indeed was a slight disappointment. Nothing to do with the size or the resolution - there's just not enough punch in it. Less than stellar contrast simply doesn't do it justice.
Elsewhere though, we're more than happy with how Sony did. The Xperia Z is the current benchmark champion, the Jelly Bean experience is excellent, with a number of custom value-adding apps like the media players and the image gallery. The Xepria Z is an impressive package and looks the part with glass-covered front and rear, and assertive upmarket design. And if you thought it doesn't get better than that, the smartphone is dust and water-resistant.
It certainly sounds like a package that's hard to beat. Not that the flagships of the last generation became obsolete overnight, but the likes of Nexus 4, Samsung's Galaxy S III and the LG Optimus G should be warming up to the thought that their days at the top are counted. And the Xperia Z is just the messenger - the arrival of their own successors (which now have no other option but to match and beat the Sony flagship experience) will seal their fate."

I don't get it, with Sony touting about OptiContrast panel, Why do all the reviews say about the low contrast? and on the page 3 for example, they listed the Contrast Ratio as quite the same level with others, but why the next tabular result is lower?

i see about 90 percent of comments are about camera. this is not as important as you people think. it is one of the best cameras out there and if there is any problem, it can be resolved with software customization that comes with Jelly bean 4.2.

Please, stop counting the non user replacable battery as a 'main disadvantage', for me it is a main advantage, i wouldn't buy a high end smartphone with a removable back cover, it'd be so cheapish looking and ugly, like Bbz10.

lots of comments defending XZ's camera and some even bashing 808 with meaningless calculations along with childish remarks like having "too many mp"...yeah, I guess the love for Sony was talking and not the real facts that the new "Exmor RS" is not such a big fuss as Sony themselves announced it - "Two Years Ahead of the Competition"

the results aren't bad at all, but I think the expectations were a little higher and after splitting from Ericsson, Sony hasn't released models that would make a real WOW just like their Cyber-Shot line did with K850, C905, Satio...shame

No one says Xperia Z is the best camera. They say it sucks.

Pureview 808 and the N8 before it are THE BEST cameras. Proven in blind tests again and again.

Xperia Z is a threat to nothing and about 6 months too late, but it appears to be a solid device for Sony (and maybe general Android) fans. Nice design.

I do hope that other manufacturers eventually adopt water and dust resistance as standard. I've personally never lost a phone to water or dust(?!), but it is a practical idea.

Good review, GSM arena - once again, the camera "issues" seem to be largely down to the size of the crop. Certainly, the Z is a little softer (though not by much) BUT the crop is zoomed in more than the others. Crop to the same relative "depth" on the others and they WILL pixelate. There is nothing at all wrong with the camera on the XZ. It looks very good, to me!

The screen has 443p density, not 441. Thats for others.

AnonD-98125, 18 Feb 2013what u get on XZ 13MP? maybe 8MP is enough?? check the pict... moreMy point was simply that no one will know the difference. The Z and all other smartphone flagships all have very good cameras. Except nexus 4 ofcors, and lumia 920 has questionable performance in video recording of even slightly backlit objects but the overall score is good here as well.

And one thing we didn't mention here is auto mode. This is not good enough on my note 2. That means that you need knowledge and time to get a good shot under all conditions, my old xperia pro was better at auto in difficult conditions and this is what 99% of users need. Because we don't often have time to mess with settings. Sony has an advantage over Samsung here.
