HTC One mini preview: First look

18 July 2013
The HTC One is certainly one of the smartphones of the year and has come a long way towards helping the Taiwanese company out of its financial woes. It was only logical then that HTC will try to capitalize on that success by bringing the same formula...

It was and still is the deal-breaker on the HTC One, for its terrible daylight performance, the thing it's going to get used for more. As GSMArena put it, "the HTC One camera can barely rival 2010 flagships on most occasions". And since I tested it and zoomed in on the photos, I can say this is true. The One mini is worse than the one S, which is cheaper. The S4 mini is more expensive, but I say it's slightly better, mostly due to this glaring oversight made by HTC.

IMO it's better to buy a slightly older phone with similar specs for a lower price. I am really glad with buying an Xperia V (250 euros) instead of some newer mid-range phone. BTW it's very similar to HTC One Mini and in addition it is water-proof, has a micro SD slot (I use a 64 GB card), has NFC, and a good 13 MPixel camera.

I do like the 720p screen on the One mini - I thought the S4 mini should have had this. However, in Carphonewarehouse they had both the S4 and S4 mini working units side by side. Comparing GSM arena's web site on both phones (full site), yes, it was *slightly* sharper on the S4 - but it was very (very) readable on the S4 mini and you could make out the text easily (both phones set to *vertical* - not horizontal). Video looked almost the same as well (horizontal) and it was hard to tell them apart (there were demo videos of Despicable Me 2 on both phones). Certainly the screen on the S4 mini looks better than my Razr i. Therefore, the non-pentile screen on the S4 Mini makes all the difference with the qHd resolution and you don't lose a great deal vs. 720p. The disappointment for me with the One Mini (as the reviewer points out) is the size versus the S4 mini. That centimetre makes all the difference. If you keep your phone in a case like I do, the choice is easy - S4 Mini (replaceable battery, SD card, smaller, lighter). Hope this helps.

Spectatour, 18 Jul 2013NO Micro SD slot. Why can't HTC add one? This is HTC One S ... moreSame thoughts exactly. 16gb might be good enough for most users but not for me.:(

The best mini phone right now. But, I wish the price could be below 400 euros.

It's either this or S4 mini. Can't wait for the full review.
