I agree, it's only common sense to care for the client even after taking his money.
Unfortunatelly, only few companies still do, these days.

Yes, that's true, but you see, you did not bought that phone from the XDA community, you have payed Samsung for it a lot of money, I think it should have been their responsibility to care for their customers satisfaction and deliver the updates themselves.
It's not like you buy a laptop with no OS just to get it cheaper and then install a pirated copy of Windows yourself.

Some guy, 20 Sep 2013People want what the advertisers want them to want. If you ... moreSome of your comments aren't exactly true. The reasons for the "cheap" build of Samsung is durability. I dug out my old iphone 4 an the Samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g touch (same generation phones I believe, I'm such a packrat) and attempted to update them. While official support wasn't available for the s2, I was able to dig up a 4.3 firmware on xda. I spent a little while updating them both (the s2 finished first) and began to reminisce. To no surprise, both of them lagged, but there was less on the galaxy. There was also less apparent wear on the galaxy, the screen was much more appealing, and the back of the s2 wasn't cracked.
              So to answer your questions
Does it still work? Yes, and seemingly better than the iPhone
The one from 2 years back? Before the galaxy? You should have been more specific, but neither iPhone or galaxy devices are revelant at this point. I'm sure there aren't many 3g's around either
Can I still update it? Yes. Not from an official source, but yes
There are Samsung handsets that are still ticking looking at xda, but I'm sure everyone that has had and original iPhone ditched it by now because the non removable battery crapped out on them. At least the s2 still runs current software decently, whereas the 4 is horribly slow. This is also the last update it will receive. Devs with the s2 will continue to tinker with upcoming android releases. And yes, the s2 runs 4.3 just fine.

My ipad was broken in less then half year (screen and charging). Yes it still works but I know enough about that supposed Apple quality. And yeah I can still update the SGS with a custom rom.

After looking at a bunch of the reviews of the top phones coming out from IFA 2013, it looks like samsung pretty much remains at the top with their note 3---best overall phone for its price---best camera under 25 mega pix--best display in the 3-7 inch display category--best audio quality with new 24 bit hd audio-32 Gb RAM on base model--very good battery life--very good design and build quality

People want what the advertisers want them to want. If you are fed every day on TV that JayZ is a very good singer, you'll end up buying his albums. Most people don't think, they follow.
That's why the build quality of products decreases with every new model. Take the car industry for example...let's say Ford...In front of my building is parked a Ford Taunus, I think it's from the '70s...it still run, and the chasis and the bumpers are made of very thick and solid steel and the headlights are made of thick plastic and very solid.
Now, I also own a Ford ...a 2007 Focus...it's made of the thinest tin I have ever seen, I can bend it with my fingers, plastics are very thin also. They say in the commercials, the new cars are very safe, and on impact you'll get out alive, but if I'll ever crush into that Taunus, I will most certainly die.
I have nothing agains the decrease in quality and usage of lower quality matrials, but my problem is the price. My Focus cost me twice the value of that Taunus when it was new.

The same applies to electronics industry... I have an old CRT TV from '93, a GoldStar (now known as LG) it works perfect, never broke, only the remote failed after many years... also I just bought a Panasonic Smart TV ...I wonder what will come of it in 20 years !

However, in this economy, there are still companies that care for quality ...and yes, Apple is one of them. And they have to pay the price of being the exception, every other company that has "adapted" is throwing punches at them and try to bring them down.

Now, back to phones...I still have my first mobile phone ..it is a NOKIA 5110! (still working)..it says on it "made in Germany" also on the battery (which I switched for a chinese one, but decent)...when I put this ancient 5110 next to a Samsung S4 and look at details, the quality of plastic, the way the buttons fit the holes, the way parts are put together and the distance between components and the usage marks, I can sadly see what has become of this industry.

I wonder, do you still have your first Samsung phone ?!
                      ..does it still work ?!
...what about the one from 2 years back ?!
...can you still update it ?!
...how about the first iPhone, does it still run ?! ...what about the iPhone4, can you update it to the new iOS 7 ?!
..how about the S2 ?! ..does it run the new 4.3 ?!

EXACTLY !!! I know what I pay my hard earned money for, that's why I go for companies like Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, Dell, CISCO, Panasonic, HP and not for Samsung, Acer, Benq, Huawei (though I think they make better products than Samsung:)) and Mercedes (if I can afforth one before they lower their standars to match KIA and Hyunday)

It's ok, I also used to think Apple makes overpriced products with low HW specs.
That was until I worked for a company that had both Apple and Windows computers. It was only then I understood what it means to work on a computer and not care for viruses, drivers, os maintenance, and just focus on your activity. Also, the Firewire at that time worked far better than USB, it was faster and never lost connection to the portable hdds (we had WDs Seagate and LaCie drives).

One more thing, I never used Symbian because for me it looked bad and the apps were slow and ugly, I went from a SonyEricsson W800 straight to the original iPhone. I got the chance to use Android devices from ver. 1.6 to 4.2.2 and I am not yet satisfied by the experience, mostly because they insist on using Java (which was the reason I avoided Symbian in the first place), but also because Android is not intuitive like iOS or Windows Phone.

So, until Google gain some experience in building decent operating systems, I am sorry, but I am forced to stick to iOS and Windows Phone devices. I hope in the future will be more alternatives (Ubuntu phone looks promising, and they also know what a good OS should look like)

Samsung was criticised for a 5.3" Note but in hindsight it was a masterstroke. They got a 2 year jump on 5"-6" devices.

I know a lot of people going from iphones to 5"+ devices (including myself). I dont know of anyone who has gone the otherway... that says it all really.

I agree, a combo of iPhone/iPad or Nexus4/Nexux10 (if will have LTE) or even S4 mini/Note10.1 is much better than this mutant !

The size and glass/aluminum body combination is much better than most oversized Android plastic devices. A phone/tablet the size of Note series and with a plastic body, will only fit in my back pocket and break first time I'll sit down.

If I want to better surf the web or see a movie or read a book, or play I just use my iPad mini or Nexus 7 or whatever tablet...

Having a big screen conflicts with portability (unless the device comes with a foldable display) so all you can do is just think what do you want a device for ?!
In my case, I want a small format phone for talking, messaging, music and take some pictures...now if I can also surf the net and play a game on it, that's just a bonus. If I want to see a movie, I use a big screen TV with 5.1 sound or a laptop or a tablet if i'm not home.

The thing is, Note 3 is a compromise, it does many things but nothing best. It is not an mp3 player because is too big, not a TV because it's too small, not a gaming platform because it has no controller and the games in Playstore suck (compared to PSP for example) it's not a GPS Navigator because there are far better devices with real time more accurate positioning...
...so why pay that much for Note 3, when you most probably already own devices that do each of those things better ?!!
