6.5 is big, 5000 mAh is big... Not the biggest but big and not compact at all. So yes, according to almost all manufacturers bigger is better, at least to them. And again, some markets like India want or need bigger batteries such as the 6000 and 7000 mAh units. Don't know why but it's like that while the rest gets a similar device with "only" 5000" mAh or less.

Anonymous, 11 Jan 2024And just like there's supposedly "no market"... moreI clearly don't think like that. I'm one of these forgotten people who crave for true compact phones, especially affordable ones and thus not only these premium bullshit ones that are overprized. You would have seen that if you would have read all my posts. I'm not preaching against compact phones, on the contrary, I want them. And again, what I posted is a reflection of someone on YouTube who explained the "why" in a language that makes sense. It isn't the bible but some of the people reacting in these posts do think that what is written is the truth and nothing but the truth, which it isn't of course. It's nothing more that a possible explanation for the "why" and it makes sense to me. I found back the link to that YouTube post: https://youtu.be/yKe1H5cIVDk?si=PZ2hPecm8shUHXNz. Check it out if you want.

The "why" is their secret and again what I posted is a reflection of a YouTuber which made sense to me about the "why". By the S version I presume you mean the vanilla S23 and that one isn't a real compact phone. Those are the in between form factors. Bij compact I mean everything "below" 6 to 6.1 inch screens like the iPhone 12 and 13 mini and the Zenfone 9/10.

atichko, 10 Jan 2024Today, sadly, bigger is better, at least according to most ... more- A54: 6.4 display, 5000mAh battery, available (almost) everywhere
        - M54: 6.7 display, 6000mAh battery, not available in most places

        - A14: 6.6 display, 5000mAh battery, available (almost) everywhere
        - F/M14: 6.6 display, 6000mAh battery, not available in most places

        - M51/M62/F62: 6.7 display, 7000mAh battery, not available in most places, such phones not produced since 2021

So, is Samsung and its customers really so into this "bigger battery and display over eveeything else" nonsense?

Seems like the answer is "No".

atichko, 10 Jan 2024Today, sadly, bigger is better, at least according to most ... moreIf small phones are supposedly so hard for manufacturers to produce, why is the smaller S phone $200 CHEAPER than the bigger "Plus" version?

Obviously, a smaller phone with a smaller display and battery is CHEAPER than a similar phone that has a bigger display and battery. The same would apply to a device with a midrange or low-end chipset.

atichko, 10 Jan 2024Today, sadly, bigger is better, at least according to most ... moreAnd just like there's supposedly "no market" for compact budget phones, there's also "no market" for the Note series, 6000mAh batteries, the headphone jack, Snapdragon chips in Europe, and anything else Samsung arbitrarily discontinues or restricts to a limited number of countries.

I hope you don't really think like that, because it's quite nonsensical.

Does the compact S23 have everything "crammed" into it too? it's $200 cheaper than the bigger plus model, you know. Seems like a very good arrangement that be done for a device with a budget chipset as well.

Anonymous, 09 Jan 2024So interesting to see people droning on and on about bigger... moreToday, sadly, bigger is better, at least according to most of all phone makers. Some markets do indeed need/want even bigger batteries such as a 6000mAh unit for some reason but I don't know why (I had one as one of the rare Samsung units available in the Netherlands and Belgium a few years ago but the supposed increased performance of the latter wasn't in line with the claims meaning not really useful). The discussion isn't really about battery size either but more about the complete form factor. One of the trade-offs mentioned by a YouTuber regarding some of the reasons why there aren't that many compact devices (almost none) was indeed the battery but it went much further with things such as the need to create a complete line of smaller screens, having to cram all the tech available for bigger units in a small space without having to compromise so much that it would be unacceptable for potential buyers (which to mee would not be an issue for budget and lower midrange devices but hey, who am I) and stuff like that. A small battery is for sure a potential setback when you want to buy a phone but that isn't the only thing. Sometimes the issue of not having small devices might also be due to us, customers, not wanting tradeoffs, thus wanting the same as in bigger slabs. All of this doesn't matter as companies such as Samsung and many others, Apple included, just don't want to make real compact phones and certainly not in the budget or lower midrange segment for whatever real reasons they might have (probably money and profit) leaving people like me and you and the others in this conversation without offerings except for some rare (and most of the time rather expensive) exceptions.

Their base iPhone as well as the iPhone Pro each year are around 5.8 inches. Only the Plus and Pro Max models are bigger. Add to that the SE model every other year. That's more than half of their (limited amount of) phones that are compact.

Samsung on the other hand produces one small S phone each year, and that's it. And the total amount of models they produce is much higher than Apple.

Anonymous, 08 Jan 2024Those "not worthy" customers are in good company.... moreTrue. Again it's not only Sammy that does this, they all do that and Apple is leading the pack. Unfair? Yes. Reality? Indeed and it's not going to change any time soon unless people would stop buying these monstrous slabs (ok, they also have advantages but on an other level and if you are prepared to use both hands...always) or if there would be a global conflict where people would have other things to worry than silly things like size and colours of smartphones. Till then you and me (and all others craving for compact devices) can only have what tere is and I'm not happy about that but I'm not going to cry about it in a corner in fetal position either. Currently I use an iPhone 13 mini because the price became somewhat reasonable (although I kind of hate Apple because of their "all into profit" marketing at exuberant proces and somehow crappy products for the money) it is a true pleasure to handle it with one hand for most of the actions, even the battery holds better than I thought (for now at least as it still is 100%). I forgot only one thing, my eyes... Using it without glaces is simply not possible and that would be the same for any other compact phone, even if character settings are put to the max. Oh well, it's doable.

These back-and-forths between everyone is getting too long. Let’s cut to the chase and concisely summarize the points that a few people made below:

Whatever phones are (or are not) produced has no correlation to what customers desire, and certain kinds of devices being discontinued does not mean people don’t want them anymore. Case in point:
                                  1) Samsung keeps using Exynos chips despite knowing full well no one wants them.
                                  2) Their 6000mAh battery phones are available in a limited amount of locations. In most countries, 5000mAh devices is the most that long battery life fans can get.
                                  3) All their budget phones are big and heavy, some to ridiculous proportions. Though many budget customers want a smaller and lighter phone (similar to the base S phone’s dimensions), Samsung won’t make it anymore. Not even one.
                                  4) They stopped the Note series even though tons of fans want it back.
                                  5) They removed the 3.5mm jacks from higher-end phones, even though many people want it back.

You can also shout "there is no market for Note phones which is why Samsung stopped it" and you'd be wrong too.

Let us clarify, 07 Jan 2024Re: your last three comments. Compact budget phones are ... moreYou know what? Why don't you start your own phone company and make all the compact phones you want as it seems you have all the wisdom for it. My very first post was about a YouTuber explaining why compact phones fail to sell, nothing more, nothing less. You mention that people buy phones they don't necessary like but there is no other choice. Well that's marketing. Marketing and sales dictates what you can buy and what not. You can argue endlessly why there isn't what you want but the fact remains that currently there is no market for compact phones for the simple reason that to them it isn't profitable and thus there is no reason to make such phones, regardless of a (apparently not so big) group of people who are shouting to see such phones in the stores, especially affordable ones. These are the market dynamics for now which means bigger is better, not smaller is better so that's it. It's as simple as that. We could spend lours and hours at arguing who is wrong and who is right but the world keeps on turning round, with or without you or me. You don't want to buy a current phone factor? Then don't and go back to a good old button phone. They are very compact. You do need a smarter phone, though luck, it's big, bigger and biggest and at the same time more expensive. That rule applies to all phone makers currently dumping new phones several times a year. The few compact phones that are available, aren't really compact and are all but cheap or affordable.
