Samsung Galaxy A17 to borrow a camera feature from its higher-end siblings

Vlad, 04 June 2025

Samsung launched the Galaxy A16 back in October, and it's now working on its successor, the Galaxy A17. While we're most likely still a few months away from this model's introduction, a new rumor out of Korea today has some good news for those looking forward to its release.

Apparently, the Galaxy A17's main camera will have optical image stabilization (OIS). Once a feature exclusive to flagships, this has trickled down Samsung's Galaxy A series of mid-rangers in the past few years, and now it seems like it's ready to make it to one of its entry-level devices as well. To keep costs down, Samsung is considering using an OIS system that uses springs, which is allegedly 20% cheaper compared to existing OIS implementations.

So far, OIS has made it as low as the Galaxy A2x series with the A26 most recently featuring the tech. Obviously, Samsung wants to use the addition of OIS to the Galaxy A17 as a key differentiator compared to its competitors, and thus increase sales. Whether that works remains to be seen, but we are glad to see such features that used to be flagship-only not so many years ago making their way to even low-end handsets like this one.
