Standard English and Technical English is two different things. Computer language is technical and it has it's own terms to be used to not make misunderstandings.

Upgrade is a physical change while update is digital change.
In car tuning when you do a upgrade on your car parts then you need to update the cpu chip and it is not upgrade for the chip as there for the chip will be replaced as an upgrade.

Native or not dont make any difference. I have been around with tech people all over the world and i have never heard them say upgrade on a software. It's just started to happen like past 10 years at maximum where new generation want to change the meaning of the words. It's same with all these dictionaries in these elite collages too.

Like in games when people use trainer programs that they pirate to cheat the game were called cheaters. Just like in schools exams people use to cheat . But in past up to 10 years now kids say to these people that they are hackers cause they use a hack. While hacker is a computer genius that finds loopholes in the system to write a program. Downloading a program, installing a program and then using a program dont make you a genius or a hacker.

    Since you're not a native speaker, it now makes sense that you don't understand English usage.
    Native speakers do use 'upgrade' for software, it is also proper use of the Standard English.

    You can use the word 'upgrade' in your IELTS and TOEFL and it would be fine. Just because the phone settings goes with 'update', doesn't mean that 'upgrade' is wrong.
    Similarly, you can use 'killer whale' or 'orca'.

      If you want to be re tar ded that is a choice you make on your own. Update and Upgrade have a different meaning for a reason. Just like in English there is He for a male and She for a female. Same is in technical language with update for software and upgrade for hardware

        Also even when you open up your phone setting and go to phone info there is a button for search UPDATES and not upgrades. Windows also give you a notification that there is a UPDATE and not upgrade.

          This, and the sentences from the previous post were from the dictionaries. Not mine.

          No abandoning of old and reinstalling new. You're just moving the goalpost now.
          So, it's fine to say, "The windows 10 OS has been upgraded from 21H1 to 21H2."

          I'll take Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries' usage over yours.
          Also, this is B2/C1 ESL level English, it might be too difficult for some people to understand. Just because you don't use it that way, doesn't mean that it's not used in Standard English as stated by Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries.

              It's like windows 10 to 11 you need to upgrade your PC hardware to get the update.

              Upgrading software means also that you abandon old software and go with the new so you basically uninstall old software and get new software to replace it.

              And the one with the price is also same thing. Just like in the past with Windows all new version you needed to buy the new windows. From Windows 8 they started to update the windows as you first got the 8.1 update and then went to windows 10 and now to windows 11 if your pc hardware meets the requirement.

              With phones there is a schedule of updates where you dont need to pay a cent cause it was in the price for the phone in the first place. With update you wont lose your old software while with the upgrade you lose your old software and replace it with a new software. Upgrade is basically when you have a Linux and then go with Windows. Or on phones case you have the One UI but unlock the bootload and install a new different version of Android skin on it. This is just example as i know we can't do it on Samsung phones and have like only few Chinese brands left that still allow you to install a different OS on the phone that actually will be a upgrade.

              It's just the lazy as heck modern people that use google translate without understanding one language they translate to.

                    After 20+ years of using samsung and android the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE has convinced me my next phone will not be a samsung. UI is worthless. Can only delete messages by opening it up, selecting menu and then delete. User guide on the phone consists of is the user guide is not available in your selected language" {English}.

                      I got OneUI 7.0 update yesterday and now it's worth upgrading from my old vivo phone

                                  Would love it if it had a side fingerprint unlock. Stupid to have to use two hands to unlock a phone. All the new flips have it. But none of the S models. Duh?

If you still didn't get the update yet, keep waiting because you will get your update soon. By the end of the May your s24 FE should receive the update.
