Samsung is working on a major camera upgrade for its next-gen flagships

While the Samsung Galaxy S26 may not be getting new camera hardware, the Galaxy S27 series could arrive with a major upgrade. A new report from South Korea suggests that Samsung is reportedly working on an all-new smartphone camera sensor with global shutter capabilities, which could arrive with its next-generation flagship smartphones. The report does not specify the exact device, but it seems like it will be present on the Galaxy S27 series.

Global shutter sensors differ from the more common rolling shutters by capturing all pixels at once without warping or distortion. This makes global shutter sensors vastly superior in capturing moving subjects compared to rolling shutters. You’d typically find global shutter sensors on professional cameras used for capturing sports events or in industrial applications such as conveyor belts for quality inspection and machine vision.

Samsung’s global shutter sensor is reportedly getting 1.5 µm-sized pixels stacked in a 2x2 formation and a 12MP resolution. The 12MP resolution suggests that the sensor will either be implemented on the telephoto or ultrawide lens. The new report also suggests Samsung’s global shutter sensor will feature an embedded analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for its pixels, which allows for faster image capture.

Samsung is not the only brand working on integrating global shutter sensors, as Apple is also reportedly pushing to bring the tech to its next-gen iPhones.
