Samsung J800 Luxe, L700 and L870 caught live

24 June, 2008

Samsung revealed some spanking new mobiles at the Singapore Telecommunications Exhibition - the Samsung J800 Luxe and Samsung L700. They also showcased the Samsung L870.

Samsung J800 Luxe

Samsung J800 Luxe name sounds a bit misleading as there is nothing luxurious about the handset. The Samsung J800 Luxe is a mid-range slider with the reasonable thickness of 15mm and a 2.2-inch 256K TFT display with the meager resolution of 176 x 220 pixels.

Samsung J800 sports a 2 megapixel camera, lacking autofocus but the phone features photo blog function, which allows direct image upload to blogs (over the 3G connection).

Other multimedia features include music and video player, FM radio with RDS, and stereo Bluetooth (A2DP). The slot for microSD cards compensates the scarce 18MB built-in memory.

The built-in office document viewer, HTML browser, POP3/IMAP4 mail client, RSS reader and Mobile Tracker complete the set of functions of Samsung J800. The tri-band phone also relies on the UMTS (2100 MHz) for fast data transfers.

The pricing and availability of the Samsung J800 is still a guessing game.

Samsung L700

The Samsung L700 is the second new midrange handset presented in Singapore. The L700 comes in the monoblock form factor and is relatively thin, measuring only 12.8mm at the waistlne. The quad-band L700 also offers UMTS support.

Sadly, this phone has an average 2.1-inch 256K TFT display with the mere resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. The 2 megapixel camera without autofocus is the other downside of the phone.

The multimedia section features the traditional Samsung music/video player, FM radio with RDS and again stereo Bluetooth. The built-in memory of 30MB can be further expanded with microSD cards.

As in J800 Luxe, the Samsung L700 also has a POP3/IMAP4 email client, HTML browser and an office document viewer.

The Samsung L700 will be released in silver, pink, and gold variations but there is no word on the pricing and the availability of the phone.

Samsung L870

The Samsung L870 was initially announced on May 28th. Despite its rather Soul-like looks, the L870 does not belong to the Soul lineup.

Samsung L870 is powered by the same Symbian OS and user interface as all Nokia N-series smartphones. This pup is only 13.5mm in thickness and has a 3 megapixel autofocus camera and a 2.4-inch 16M color TFT display with QVGA resolution.

The Samsung L870 has tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus HSDPA 3.6Mbps for fast wireless data transfers. Speaking of wireless, the only thing that let us down in the L870 specs sheet is the lack of Wi-Fi functionality.

The Samsung L870 will also host FM radio and Bluetooth and USB connectivity. The internal memory is 100MB and the memory card slot can take a microSD card with a capacity of up to 4GB.

The Samsung L870 will be available in Europe this August 2008 - that will be a fast one. Pricing is yet unknown however.

I have 2 J800's. The battery life is rubbish. The same battery fits in other Samsung phones, and I have tested it in them, where it lasts longer! I get 2 days before recharging (using Bluetooth on). I had an old Samsung SGH-411 which lasted a week...
