Samsung remains the top smartphone display maker for Q1 2017

Samsung was the top display maker in the world the first quarter of the year, raking in $3.5 billion of revenue. This accounts for 27.2% of global market share for smartphone displays or displays under 9 inches. This is all according to industry firm IHS Markit, the Korea Herald reports.

Sales revenue went up from Q1 2016 as the demand for more expensive curved/flexible OLED panels rose over the past year. While Samsung dominated the $13 billion industry, Japan Display followed with 17.8% share of the market, with LG Display Co. and Chinese BOE Technology Group trailing behind the top two.

Analysts are impressed with the numbers, considering the first quarter is considered to be the “off season” in the industry. This must have changed, as Samsung’s “S” flagship phones with curved displays became the shining stars of the first quarter of the year.
