Samsung's new ISOCELL Slim 3T2 sensor is designed for punch hole cameras

Samsung announced its new ISOCELL Slim 3T2 image sensor with emphasis on small size. The sensor makes use of the company's ISOCELL Plus technology and features 20MP resolution that fits in a tiny 1/3.4" form factor. According to the company that's the smallest image sensor currently on the market.

The sensor fits 0.8μm pixels and comes with the Tetracell binning tech that combines four pixels into one for better results in low-light conditions. Effectively, when there's not much light the sensor acts as a 5MP unit with big 1.6μm pixels.

The ISOCELL Slim 3T2 can also be used as a main camera for telephoto purposes in which case it uses a standard RGB color filter instead of the Tetracell array. It reduces the sensor's height even further by around 7% while retaining 60% higher effective resolution at 10x digital zoom compared to a normal 13MP unit.

Still, Samsung says the ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is mostly meant for use in modern notch and punch hole camera designs due to its small size. It is expected to go into mass production this quarter and will likely appear in future mid-range handsets.
