They don't sell because they are not tailored for our market.
Japanese handsets are unique in their size and features, and typically way ahead of the rest of the world.
The SX862 is a radically cut version of the 920SH - but it's SHARP telling us they are giving this another go.
I believe that Hong Kong and Taiwan will gladly receive this handset! If so, SHARP will hopefully keep HK and TW up to date with other developments. Then I don't care if they release this in Europe, as long as I can get the HK version I'm happy!

Tried to contact with local vodafone UK and they stated no new Sharp phone are in their new phone list. What a shame! Guess I need to import this baby in. I have DoCoMo SH905i too. The screen is just superb! Like portable Full HD Plasma TV

Sharp doesn't produce many types for the EU market anymore because it doesn't sell.
The SX862 is a glimpse of hope for the HK market to revive SHARP in the east/west sector. It won't be available in Europe, and we probably won't see any of these handsets until mid 2009 if ever.

@The V
I'm currently using the SH905i from DoCoMo and it's using the same screen, isn't it just beautiful??? Love it...
Does the SX862 accept SDHC microSD cards?
I would switch to the SX862 if the music quality and microSD capacity would be the same.
The SH905i is a Dolby Mobile handset and the sound quality is amazing! iPod standard if you ask me...
Cheers,
Harlekkin

I just bought the Sharp SX862. There seems to be quite a number of misconceptions out there so I'll try to dispel as many as I can. I bought mine in Hong Kong from SmarTone. While the phone is in fact LOCKED to their users only, if you buy the handset, what they actually do is UNLOCK it for you. No you don't have to be a SmarTone customer (though I am) and its actually better for you NOT to take their handset subsidy offer (you actually have to pay a deposit to unlock it if take their subsidy). Then, all the functions does in fact work.
HOWEVER, SmarTone has a number of functions that they have exclusive for this handset. For example, they have special music and video downloads that is only available for their users. In addition, they have their own streaming video/TV which only works on their network. So if you buy this phone, you don't get to do that.
Despite that, this phone is pretty cool. I believe its the same one as in the movie Iron Man. Anyway, the screen is the real winner. Wow - it actually does look sharper and better than my iPhone. I had problems encoding my files to play video, but I figured the right setting and its fine (similar to iPhone).
Call quality, etc. is all great. The phone is much lighter and thinner than I would have thought for a clamshell design with a big screen.
The one downside I have found is that NOT all websites load properly. It's better than generic browsers on most phone, but definitely not better than the iPhone. Still, I've been having problems with my WM6 Explorer as well so I don't know what's going on. The pages are fast though and its clear HSDPA is there.
There is a camera for video calling (someone said there wasn't). Yup, NO WiFi, which is too bad. Youtube now does not work on my home network (I'm using it OUTSIDE of HK and away from SmarTone) though it worked in the store when I was trying it out so it might be my network.
I was a little bit worried about battery life given the screen and the small battery capacity, so I bought an extra batter, but in the past 3 days, I haven't had the need to use it despite me using the SX862 as my MP3 player for 30 minutes every morning.
Well... let's see how it holds up in the coming weeks...

This is NOT the 920SH.
- The SX862 is FULLY unlocked.
- It does NOT have digital TV, only HSDPA TV.
- And from my knowledge it does NOT have a FeliCa chip.
