Means, You have to hack into the phone's internal file system using suitable application. Though there is a slight risk involved, it is commonly done by SE users.

Please note that 'vodafone live' doesn't give access to IMAP. You have to connect using 'vodafone mobile connect'. Vodafone live has limited access while the latter is a full featured internet profile.
Menu-settings-connectivity-internet settings. Vodafone connect must be there. If not contact your operator. And still not getting, revert to me, I shall try to help with the settings.
After changing profile, check e-mail again..

Easy to read and follow. But I have already tried it all, still did not work. :-( After the phone tries to "Finding Server" it displays the msg--Server not found. I called up SE help lien but they cud not help either. I am on Vodafone, Kolkata, India.

1. Log in to your gmail account in COMPUTER.
2. Settings> Forwarding and POP/IMAP>Enable IMAP
3.Save Changes and log out
4. In phone, go to Messaging>E-mail, create new account
5. Enter basic information. Thereafter the phone will ask permission to download suitable settings. Confirm.
6. When set up is complete, you'll be asked whether to check mails. Choose 'NO'
7. Select E-mail settings.
8. choose inbox size. Let it be 25 or your choice.
9. Choose download option; I recommend 'subjects only' because this will save data and you can view the full message after viewing subject.
10. Check interval- select it.Email will be checked regularly and You'll be alerted
11. Push e-mail; this may be inactive at first. After the first check up, you'll be informed if push e-mail is supported. Push e-mail instantly delivers mail as it reaches server, instead of checking in intervals. It uses slightly excess data and internet symbol will be displayed always.
12. Select settings in the 'General' tab also- like email alert tone, signature etc
When set up is complete, go to e-mail inbox and check new mail.
Try it. It is far advanced than the gmail java app.

Its purpose is only to free phone memory and to provide more room(unlimited) for sms. It is still linked with the phone memory and so You'll loose them even if you remove memory card before software update or formatting phone memory
Java apps...it depends. Depends on the installation and database uses phone memory also. In some early SE models, data is lost and apps have to be re-installed after phone formatting. In naite..I'm not sure

You really know ur stuff! thanks man for all the advise. You are right. My phone mem is almost full. Only 47 MB is left. I will try out ur advises..... Just one thing? How do I change the path for the sms s to get saved onto my mem card instead of my phone mem? And even if I remove the mem card before update how will the SMSs and java apps get deleted from it????
