Sony Ericsson K750, W800: First look
Sony Ericsson W800 Walkman
Sony Ericsson W800 "Walkman" is basically the same as the K750 model. It has just different design, enables listening to the music with the phone part switched off and it will be supplied straight with a 512 MB memory card. Otherwise it's an identical phone from a functional point of view.
Contrary to the dark design of the Sony Ericsson K750 the Walkman has a bright look. The front and back parts are milky, a richly orange metallic paint shines on the sides of the phone. The display is the same; small decorative dots are covering its frame. There is a symbol of a musical note on the new key between the two soft keys; the key starts again the fast selection menu. Either it's a prototype or the producer assumes that the user will set the MP3 player and the radio in this menu.
I find the joystick a bit more sensitive than at the K750 but it's well controllable too. It's worse with numeric keys. It doesn't matter that they're smaller but I have a less steady feeling of press.
The keyboard layout is identical to the K750. On the left side there is a key for fast start-up of the media player, a place for the memory card below it. The volume/zoom controller and the camera shutter are on the right.
The back part is different only by its look. Sliding plug protects the lens system of the 2MP camera, but the mirror is constantly outside and also the external antenna connector plug is designed differently. All these elements are placed on the same positions as with the K750.
I'm afraid a bit that the white back surface will easily get dirty. It's made of a matte plastic and I won't be surprised if it will lose its milky color and will get stained. Edges of the phone I tested were already a bit dirty.
Conclusions are identical: Sony Ericsson W800 "Walkman" will be an excellent mobile phone. If you'd prefer the K750 design, just buy a bigger memory card and headphones - it's identical from the functionality point of view. Well, it won't be possible to listen to MP3 music when the phone part is off, but this shouldn't be such a problem.
There might be a problem with the headphones, because you won't find a classic jack connector, just a Fast Port. It means that you have to use the original SE headphones or possibly use an adaptor from Fast Port to standard headphone jack.
The approximate prices of Sony Ericsson K750 and W800 when they hit the streets will be respectively 375 and 425 Euro
