Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 caught on video, will cost under 200 euro

21 June, 2010

From the roster of newly announced Sony Ericsson phones, the XPERIA X8 is the first to get a hands on video on the Sony Ericsson Product Blog. The video is short, but it's enough to show that the UI has elements from both the big XPERIA X10 and the X10 mini.

Despite having a 3" HVGA screen, which should be big enough to work with widgets the way Android does, the UI on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 sticks to the X10 mini approach to widgets - one per screen and no shortcuts or folders (aside from the four shortcuts at the corner of the screen, of course.

It is however big enough for a portrait on-screen QWERTY keyboard (unlike the X10 mini, which relied on a virtual alphanumeric keypad). And although it isn't shown in the video, there should be a landscape QWERTY too, as the virtual keyboard looks to be the stock Android one.

Anyway, enough with the talking and on with the video:

The video also drops an important hint - the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 will retail in most markets for under 200 euro (250 US dollars). This low price point will be good for sales - the likes of the Motorola FlipOut quote prices around 350 euro.

Sony Ericsson reminds us that this is unfinished software running on prototype hardware - by launch time, some details might change.

No LED flash, no torchlight, no incall- recording Yek. They can keep it. It looses more than it gains. It's just a fat X10-mini with normal android resolution so that more apps run as they should.
