Does this phone has the ability to read MS Office or .pdf files, like the Samsung D600?

TO Dark Ray,
Thanks for your opinion about Sony Ericsson Z550i. Yep, you told it right the X700 doesn't rings & vibrate at the same time, and in fact the vibrator is not of sufficient power. Actually, I am hard core Sony Ericsson fan - I had owned K500i & K700i, once I had little J200i, even. And I agree to it that no one makes phone like Sony Ericsson. And, the best I had ever used was K700i. But only thing now is M2 cards are very expensive and not widely available (in India).
Anyway, thanks for your valuable opinion on Sony Ericsson Z550i. Keep writing... :-)

hello, thanks for all the uselful info. one question: in the black/silver model, is the silver part metal or plastic? (i presume the black part is plastic). and if plastic would you say it's more or less durable, rather than flimsy-ish? thanks!

Yeah if you hold down the 5 button you go to the first J letter, 6 button goes to first M letter etc.

Perhaps a stupid question but... can you reach the phonebook by holding a number like in older (Sony)Ericsson phones? I can't find anything about it in the manual on the SE-webpage. What I mean is that pressing (and holding) for instance '5' you will reach the phonebook and the first 'j'-name (6 will result in the first m-name, 7 the first p-name and so on). Have SE taken away this or just forgotten to mention it in the manual?

I am seriously considering getting this phone, the only problem is that it works on 900/1800/1900Mhz, and I am with Cingular, Philadelphia, which uses 850/1900 Mhz. I am concerned that with one less band accessible to this phone (the 850 Mhz band), the reception and call quality may suffer. Does anybody in the US on the Cingular network have any insight in this matter? Any general comments on reception in the US with this phone? Thanks in advance.

OK, my phone stopped crashing & i promised to make a review of this phone..For me, Z550 is the best clamshell SE has ever produced..Comparing it to my old Samsung E730, w/c is a nice phone too, it is defintely ahead in a few aspects, more specifically the expandable memory card.
DISPLAY - It is vivid & sharp, can stand up with E730/E720/E770/D500 from samsung. In fact, it doesnt fade in the sun unlike some samsung phones. Comparing it with W550i/K750i/W800i, it is sharper, bigger & more colorful. The external display is very useful. It is readable & even shows the song & artist when on playing mp3. However, when on radio, it doesnt show the station.
MP3 PLAYER - I had W550i before & the sound is comparable (in the headset), & it's awesome. Ofcors, u need to buy the walkman headset or other quality headsets to have CD-like soundings because d package doesnt provide one. It doesnt hav control keys outside so u hav to open the phone to change track. THere's only 1 key outside the phone, the volume key.
CAMERA - No flash. BUt the quality is fantastic, better than normal 1.3MP Camera. I would say the quality is like Nokia 6630. Definitely better than W550i/ Samsung E730/ Noki 6230i.
VIDEO - Crap.Very low resolution like most SE phones. Dont even think of using it.
BATTERY - I charge it almosy every 2 days coz i used it as an MP3 player, listen to the radio. If u just make some calls & text, it shud last for 3-4 days.
DESIGN - Very sleek, compact. MOre good looking than samsung E series. Nokia has no clamshell phone of this quality. It beats 6131/6125 in any given day.
Ok that's it. Basically, it's K750i in clamshell factor with significantly improved software. Phonebook search is done by typing the first letters. No stupid "message sent" pop-up.No stupid joystick. THe keys are soft & responsive. They are backlighted in blue.
If you want an SE phone in a flip-top factor, this is the phone. Dnt even compare this to W300i, it's plastic, keys are annoying, and the display is xtremly poorer. It's only the package that is good about W300i. If SE provided 256MB MS micro, a walkman headset in this phone, nobody would even think of buying W300i. C")

To Jokuvuan:
No problem. You are welcome :-)
Regarding your question, you cannot go into silent mode without opening the clamshell. If the phone rings while the clamshell is closed, pressing the volume buttons will mute (but not hangup) the ringtone immediately though.
BTW, I will not be posting the Panaromic shots already. The built-in software is not good at it and the final results are not worth it at all as the frames are rather badly stitched up. Too gimicky for practical use.
Cheers! :-)

Very nice pictures DarkRay, really appreciate it!
One more question: can you turn the phone to silent without opening it and pressing the #-key? Can it be done by pressing the external volume-keys located at the left side of the phone?

For those interested in the quality of Z550i's camera, I have done a mini-review at:
dmoasis.com/z550i/camera.htm
Do note that for the purpose of bandwidth conservation, I will probably remove this page after 1 month.
Hope it's useful.... :-)

GSM Arena always do something funky to URLs. So the sina.com's Chinese review link will not work. Try:

I am busy with work these few days due to a project, but I will try to take and upload some photos a few days later, including panaromic ones, which the phone supoprts. :-)

To VK,
Personally, I think the Z550i is better, but it's of course a matter of personal taste. The only two thing which the X700 really does better is its inclusion of stereo speakers and that the MicroSD card it uses is cheaper. But otherwise, Z550i has rather similar features to the X700.
For me, I love clam shells over candy bar phones because I think their ergonomics are better in the sense that the earpiece is at the ear while the mouth piece is very close to the mouth when unfolded. I find myself constantly cupping the mouthpiece with my freehand when I am using a candy bar phone.
I feel that the Z550i is classier with a significant portion of the phone covered with textured metal (brushed or otherwise). I also like Sony Ericsson's better and more user friendly interface (especially for messaging) and has proper themes support.
Most important of all, the Z550i can vibrate and ring at the same time. I am quite sure this is absent on the X700.

To jojokulit:
Could it be a phone problem? I had been using my phone for close to 2 weeks without any sort of reset. I think there is only 1 version of retail firmware available so far.

Just my 2 cents.... :-)

IMO, the design looks a little outdated, but it has a good price per performance here.
