Sony on 'Make in India' : Discussions on, but nothing concrete yet

Himanshu, 03 September, 2016

If you recall, Sony said last year that it is "very seriously" considering starting a manufacturing facility in India. Now, when asked if there has been any progress in this regard, the company's India Managing Director Kenichiro Hibi has said that they are still serious about it but nothing has moved on ground yet.

"Don't deny any possibility. Still in discussion for opportunities in the future to expand manufacturing, but nothing concrete," Hibi said. "We are talking more seriously about what we can do in India."

The Japanese company, which has manufacturing units in its home country, as well as China and Malaysia, currently only has a software development centre in India with an employee strength of 1,500. It has, however, started assembling televisions and other media products in the country in association with a local partner.
