Please told ... moremy suggestion is go for nexus 6p if you don't want your phone to lag.
nexus phones doesn't lag because they run pure android but in all other phones they have their own user interface so that is why all the android phones doesn't look the same for example samsung has its touch wiz,xiaomi has miui,sony has xperia ui,htc has sense ui....
What is lagging?
If the instructions btw processor and outputs i.e screen,sound.. doesn't match then you will see lagging.The mismatch occurs because the hardware and software are not optimized perfectly.In nexus,apple,nokia phones h/w nd s/w are perfectly optimized so there is no question of lagging.so the custom user interface over pure android causes phone to lag.
also the custom ui occupies ram nearly 1gb.so u will have only 2gb if u buy xperia z3 nd m5.so google for it more and take decision wisely.(the motorola phones also have pure android).
now coming to your question.
go for z3 plus
z3 plus have more specs than m5 and the main thing is that z3 plus have snapdragon where m5 has Mediatek.
advantage of snapdragon is that it has its own gpu so the cpu and gpu optimized perfectly so there are less chances that you can observe lag.
whereas mediatek doesnt have its own gpu so sony buys gpu from another company and cpu and gpu optimization becomes difficult.so u can observe some lag compared to snapdragon.

Finally, my region has the latest 32.2.A.0.224 (Android 6.0.1) yesterday via OTA.
This firmware is the one takes the longest upgrade time which scare me during the installation with the droid on the screen.
Everytime when there is a new firmware available, I will reboot my phone to minimize any unknown impact due to some apps/process running in background. This time, as usual, perform the upgrade (from 6.0.0) after rebooted. Reading the status bar of installation which from left to right normally. However, when the status bar full at right, the installation keep running and my Z3+ didn't restart. After 10 minutes remained no progress, I was wondering that something wrong and worried about crash.
Another 5 minutes then my Z3+ rebooted. Thanks!! Then the upgrade proceeded optimization which very very slow. I can read only 76 apps to be optimized which finally took almost 30 minutes to be completed. Then my Z3+ had reboot prompt 2 more time.
Its looks like Sony this time put a lot enhancements and fixes in the 6.0.1 upgrade although my Z3+ already running 6.0.0.

Z3+ has overheating problems but after I updated to Android 6 overheating is no longer there. So I suggest u updated as soon as possible after u buy it. And one thing z3+ has higher processing capability than m5

I'm not faced heat like in all reviews.. because my previous device is Xperia Z1, the heat is less than that device.. and i read somewhere while calling, or normal operation the device over heats, but that is not true... I'm not feel any kind of problem with these issue... & latest update 32.2. A.0.224, improved it's performance i got antutu benchmark 86323, older android marshmallow 6.0 only touch benchmark 83000. it's touch is awesome when our hand wet, even touch work if water drops in display. I'm not faced uncomfortable heat until now.. if u have budget to buy Z5 buy it, or by Z3+ .... I'm choosed Z3+ Single SIM (E6553) because of It supports Quick Charge 2.0 , Wet touch works smoothly, it have 5mp front cam, exposed usb port (major reason to buy Z3+), LTE Cat 6 , It has Dual WiFi antenna, etc etc... So I'm Enjoying my device..
