TCL 50 Pro NextPaper get the Android 15 OS upgrade on 16/09/2025. Update size: 7.4GB. My Current Version: v7.0.AGFB ---> New Version: vAPAA (15-10).

I bought this phone for my godfather today. He needed a replacement for his older RedMi. It was $497 AU. The only other options were old Oppo or Motorolas.

I was really impressed with the screen. It's actually quite incredible. Zero reflections whatsoever and great viewing angles. It's what even matte screens could dream of being. The NxtPaper (e-Ink) display is so nice to look at and read on. I love that you can flick it on with a dedicated physical button. Battery life in that mode is absolutely massive. The camera has some interesting features I haven't seen on other phones and the TCL rom is 100% stock and only comes with garbage Facebook and TikTok as extra apps which are easily removed.

There's no AI bloat. No apps bloat. No settings bloat. No UI/UX bloat. The RedMi my godfather had was so full of ads ads and more ads. Ads on the lockscreen, in the settings, in system apps, in stock apps, it's just ads and more ads. I have a Xiaomi 15 Ultra myself and I managed to debloat and block those but he hadn't and it was a nightmare to use. This TCL is nice and fast and clean.

At first the specs of the phone don't look anything special at all. Battery is mediocre size, charging speed is mediocre, mediatek CPU, no 4K video (at all), only 2 major OS upgrades, 8GB of RAM is half other flagships. Sadly it doesn't come with a case either and finding one in any store is impossible.

However, it's for my godfather. He's in his late 60s. It has a huge screen, it's super easy on the eyes for reading, battery life is good, it's fast enough for him, the camera is still 108MP (he doesn't need 4K video lol) and the speakers are decent. On top of that, it came with a 2 year warranty. In Australia most products only get a 1 year so that's also nice. Also the 512GB internal storage, microSDXC slot and eSIM are a nice touch, albeit not so important. I give it a solid 3 stars. I found him a basic case on Amazon for $20. If they had included one with the phone, I'd give it another star just for that.

I honestly hope to see more stuff like NxtPaper in other devices. It seems TCL is making it into tablets too. I respect any company that is doing something different and isn't releasing the same junk every year like Samsung with zero innovation or change. I miss brands like HTC that were always pushing boundaries and creating new things like this. So I wish TCL the best.

The same phone they rebranded and released in India by the name of Alcatel V3 ultra 5g.

Pwm on LCD is not like on amoled. It goes above 20.000, usually 40-50k. It's not harmful for the eyes and u will be satisfied. To achieve higher brightness on LCD, companies must use pwm instead of DC dimming, cause it is a lot cheaper, but as I said, high frequencies are not harmful.

Nokia X3, 04 Jan 2025what? it's LCD with pwm?I am not sure really. There is a post on Reddit that says the support told him that it has PWM. Also someone on Youtube measured something, but cannot be sure of the conclusion. But today Notebookcheck made a review and it says no PWM. I also asked my local TCL to clarify, but no reply yet. It is confusing, so hopefully it does not have it.

                              what? it's LCD with pwm?
