Tecno Phantom V Fold2 review
Triple 50MP camera setup
The Phantom V Fold2 features roughly the same camera hardware as its predecessor, with two minor upgrades. The ultrawide camera is now 50MP, up from 13MP, and the sensor is bigger too.
The selfie camera also gets some attention and is now 32MP, up from 16MP. There are two of those - one on the cover screen and one on the inside.
Sadly, we weren't able to identify the camera sensors.
Daylight photos
Main camera
The main camera produces decent-looking daylight samples with relatively good dynamic range given the unideal lighting conditions. Sharpness is okay, but fine detail is often lost in objects like foliage and trees. Colors could use a slight boost also.
2x zoom camera
The 2x zoom camera is a bit too soft for a shooter with such short reach, but the overall rendition seems similar to the main one. In fact, we find the highlights/shadows balance slightly better.
Ultrawide camera
The ultrawide isn't very wide, to begin with, but the barrel distortion is very limited. We've seen sharper stills from competing ultrawide solutions, but the dynamic range and color reproduction are fine.
Selfies
The selfies are surprisingly good. They appear detailed, sharp and the subject's face is always well exposed. And since both displays feature the same selfie unit, it doesn't matter how you take your selfies.
Low-light photos
Main camera
The system will trigger the dedicated Night mode if the lighting conditions are appropriate. The samples are clean with excellent dynamic range and colors. There's plenty of detail in the shadows and the highlights.
2x zoom camera
The 2x zoom camera's samples are a bit darker but offer а wide dynamic range. Sharpness isn't great, though, and the level of detail could use some boosting.
Ultrawide camera
The ultrawide samples are okay for this sort of camera. The photos come out a bit overexposed, so not even HDR can rescue the highlights.
Video recording
The Phantom V Fold2 supports video recording at up to 2160p resolution at 60fps with all of its cameras on the back. The selfie units, however, are capped at 1080p@60fps. The device offers standard stabilization as well as an advanced one that mimics action cameras, but that mode is capped at 4K@30fps.
You can check out the playlist below, which includes multiple video samples.
Quality-wise, the footage from the main camera is good - decently sharp, detailed and with a wide dynamic range.
Unfortunately, the 2x zoom footage is considerably softer and with darker shadows.
The ultrawide is understandably softer but maintains the same rendition as the main camera.
