Tecno Spark 10 Pro review

High-res cameras on both sides

The Tecno Spark 10 Pro has what appears to be a dual camera on the back and a single camera at the front. There is a dual-LED flash on both sides.

Tecno Spark 10 Pro review

It's interesting that Tecno says there are three cameras at the back on its official website, but if you are looking at the official specs, it clearly says two cameras. Things will get even more weirder in a bit.

The 50MP main camera uses either the Samsung (S5K)JN1 (1/2.76", 064µm pixels) or the Hynix Hi5021Q (1/2.55", 0.7µm) sensor. Our unit has the Hynix imager. The lens aperture is f/1.6, there is no optical stabilization, and PDAF is supported.

We could not find any information on the depth sensor. When covered, the camera app will show a prompt that it's covered. But the hardware scanning apps read the thing as "fake_serial_yuv". This is all the information we got, unfortunately.

The front camera uses the 32MP Samsung S5KGD2 1/2.8" sensor with 0.8µm pixels and TetraPixel color filter (Quad-Bayer). It sits behind a 25mm f/2.45 lens, the focus is fixed.

The camera app is straightforward - aside from the full-auto photo mode being called AI Cam, things are mostly as expected. You can swipe between the different modes. Or swipe sideways (or up), to reveal the extra modes in the More menu. Super Night is available for the main camera.

There is also a Pro mode for the main camera; you can control everything, including the focus and the shutter speed (32s maximum).

In Film mode, you have different presets for short videos. Bokeh mode is available in Video mode if that's your thing.

Daylight image quality

The main camera saves 12.5MP photos by default, and those taken in good light are likable. They offer faithful color presentation, high contrast, good dynamic range and balanced rendition. The resolved detail, however, is quite low upon closer inspection.

There is a 2x zoom toggle, but there is no in-sensor zoom, just digital zoom, and the 2x photos are extremely poor.

Most of the 50MP photos we shot on the Tecno Spark 10 Pro turned out to be upscalings from the default 12.5MP images.

But for some reason, these two are actually proper 50MP photos. Not that they would be any good as they are of low detail and exhibit a lot of noise.

We've established that we are not sure if the Spark 10 Pro has a depth sensor or not. But portrait mode is available, and it offers good portraits with colorful and well-exposed subjects, good contrast and dynamic range, and low noise. The detail is average, again.

The subject separation is good enough, and the blurred background is nice.

The selfie camera uses a 32MP TetraPixel sensor, meaning it saves 8MP by default. And those are okay for this budget class - the resolved detail is enough, but we are not as happy with the skin tones and color rendition.

There is a 32MP mode for the selfie camera, but quite expectedly, it saves upscaled images from the 8MP output.

The front camera has a tiny dual-LED flash around and flashes together with a white screen. There is support for Night Mode, too. Using the flash offers a detailed and sharp enough photo, but a bit desaturated.

Without the flash, the color saturation improves, but the resolved detail is a bit lower, and some noise appears.

Finally, using the Night Mode offers a brighter photo with good colors, but the detail is even lower.

The default low-light photos from the rear camera are soft and noisy. The colors are not that great either.

The Night Mode requires about 2-3s to complete and another 2s to save the image. And the ones we shot are quite bright and likable, with saturated colors and boosted exposure, but there is no improvement in the overall detail and sharpness.

Video capturing

The Tecno Spark 10 Pro supports up to 1440p@30fps with its primary and selfie cameras. There is no 60fps option, and there is no electronic stabilization.

The 1440p@30fps clips are captured with about 20Mbps video bitrate. The audio is mono with 128Kbps bitrate, and the sound is good, even if a bit shallow.

The 1440p footage from the rear camera is very good - there is a lot of resolved detail and a likable natural rendition. The dynamic range is good, the contrast is great, and the colors are accurate.

The low-light video is alright, with good exposure, saturated colors and adequate dynamic range. The noise is a bit high and gets in the way, but still - the clip is very much usable.

Finally, the 1440p selfie video is of excellent contrast, color presentation and, once again, a good rendition. The resolved detail is average, and the dynamic range is a bit narrow.

Finally, the Tecno Spark 10 Pro in our video comparison database.

Useless phone. The screen freezes. If you switched off the phone and to restart it takes very long time. The sound quality is very poor. Not recommend to buy.
