The Android 12 beta causes some OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro phones to bootloop (there is a fix)

Google unveiled Android 12 beta yesterday and several makers announced that owners of select devices will be able to test drive it. The list includes the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro, but the firmware was pulled almost as fast as it was released after the first users to try it reported that it caused their phones to bootloop.

First off, this isn’t permanent – there’s a way to save the device using a Qualcomm tool that flashes the phone in Emergency Download Mode. This pinned post in the OnePlus forum explains how to roll back to stable Android 11.

So, what happened? Well, if you didn’t unlock your bootloader before installing the beta firmware, the phone would get stuck at at a particular screen (factory reset protection) and rebooting the device leads to a bootloop.

For now OnePlus has pulled the update as it looks for a way to fix the issue. As usual, updating to beta software is not recommended for phones you use as a daily driver, so even once the issue is fixed and the update reintroduced you may want to be patient and wait for the stable firmware to arrive.

Some people did manage to successfully install and run Android 12, though. By the looks of it, some features are still in progress, like the redesigned quick toggles in the notification shade.
