The nubia Red Magic 5G will not support 80W fast charging after all

Peter, 04 February 2020

It seems that the 80W fast charging that President Ni Fei teased for the nubia Red Magic 5G isn’t happening. Fei’s latest post asks people which they prefer “100W + 4,000mAh, 55W + 4,500mAh or 30W + 5,000mAh”, no mention of 80W.

We think that 55W will be the phone’s real charging speed. The Red Magic 3 and 3s charge at just 18W (with a 5,000mAh battery), so even 30W would be an upgrade. And the tech isn’t ready for 100W. But more importantly, we already saw a 3C certification for a 55W charger.

Anyway, Fei reiterated that the Red Magic 5G will have a 144Hz screen, which along with 5G puts a lot of strain on the battery. Hence capacity may be more important than speed of charge.

Interestingly, the phone is said to feature a cooling fan not for the chipset but for the battery. That made sense when the target was 80W, but now we wonder if the fan may be dropped – competing brands have hit 50W without active cooling.

Faster charging requires thicker batteries, so either less mah in equal size or more thicc batteries for same mah as your m30s.
