Sony Xperia Z2 Compact may have just passed by the FCC

03 April, 2014

The Xperia Z1 Compact may not be a one-off, in fact the FCC might have already certified its successor, the Z2 Compact. It already certified the Sony SO-04F "Altair" – an NTT DoCoMo device going by the model number.

The Sony Xperia Z1 for NTT was SO-01F, the Z1 Compact (under the name Z1 f) was SO-02F, which leaves the Xperia Z2 and Z2 Compact to claim the 03F and 04F model names respectively (though neither has been made official yet).

The Sony SO-04F measures 127.6 x 65.5mm, a millimeter taller and wider than the Xperia Z1 Compact.

FCC schematic for the Altair • photos of what could be Z2 Compact's back panel

Photos revealed the back panel of an Xperia phone with a 1/2.3", 20.7MP sensor and Sony G Lens, all reserved for the Xperia Z phones. The positioning of the LED flash suggests this is a Z Compact phone rather than one of the big ones (Z1 and Z2 have the flashes under the camera lens).

Looking at the schematics provided by the FCC, the SO-04F Altair, looks even more like a Compact – the positioning of the front-facing camera and sensors match that of the Z1 Compact. (the Z1 and Z2 front-facing cameras are next to the earpiece, rather than in the right corner).

It terms of specs, we're guessing the Z2 Compact will match the big Xperia Z2, aside from the screen, of course. This one could have a bigger screen judging by the difference in dimensions - a 0.2" bump to 4.5" with slightly thinner bezels? We'll have to wait for the front panel to leak to find out.

Thanks to Mr. A for the tip!
