There are now 300k apps on the Windows Store

08 August, 2014

Microsoft has a milestone to celebrate: they have now reached over three hundred thousand applications on the Windows Phone Store.

Non-iOS and Android platforms are usually criticized by their lack of applications, and Microsoft, knowing that this is a significant issue, has done its due diligence in drawing in developers to create apps for its mobile platform.

If MS wants to catch up to Apple, however, it’ll need to work much harder, as the Cupertino-based tech company can boast that it has over 1.2 million applications on its App Store.

A Microsoft Spokesperson had this to say about the company's surge in apps:

"We have more than 300,000 Windows Phone apps today and the Windows Phone Store continues to grow…in the past year alone the Windows and Windows Phone app catalog has grown 94 percent, while the number of active developers has grown by 50 percent."

This is not to say that Microsoft’s growth isn’t impressive; there were over 100,000 applications added in a six month period in 2013 alone. Microsoft also hopes to exponentially increase its app numbers with the advent of its Universal Apps platform: applications that’ll work on both desktop and mobile operating systems. Developers will only have to worry about coding for one version, so, by default, any Windows application could be used over a wide variety of devices, whether it be a phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.
