T-Mobile US Q1 results: 500K iPhone 5 sales, user base grows
T-Mobile USA has been undergoing a lot of changes recently – the company launched its new UNcarrier model, started unrolling a 4G LTE network and merged with MetroPCS – and it just released its Q1 results. There's some good news and some bad news.
The good news is that the carrier sold about 500,000 iPhone 5 units after the April 12 launch (plus an undisclosed numbers of older generation iPhones). T-Mobile also saw its postpaid customer base grow by 3,000, which doesn’t sound like much but it's the first growth since 2009, and the churn rate fell to 1.9% (the lowest since 2008, this number shows how many users leave the carrier).
Actually, T-Mobile added 579,000 customers to its flock, but that's mostly from MVNOs operating on its network (376,000) and pre-paid users (202,000).
The bad news is that while revenue is up 12.4% compared to the previous quarter, it's down 7.5% year on year. Also, net income was $107 million, down from $200 million from last year's Q1.
