T-Mobile will throttle your data if you abuse it

13 August, 2014

Tether with your T-Mobile plan all day long, torrenting files and streaming Netflix like there’s no tomorrow? Well we have some bad news for you. Beginning on August 17th, T-Mobile will start throttling the data speeds of power users who abuse the system.

An internal corporate document revealed the initiative that will affect Unlimited 4G LTE Plans. It won’t happen to you out of nowhere though, as T-Mobile will give you a warning first. If you ignore it, your speeds will be slowed until you get billed again.

Check out this official statement from Big T themselves:

As America's Un-carrier, we have broken the wireless industry rules to abolish numerous customer pain points and provide our customers with the fastest nationwide 4G LTE network. A very small number of our customers are misusing their Simple Choice Unlimited data service in violation of their rate plan and terms and conditions by bypassing the default tethering feature or engaging in peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing.

This type of usage can negatively impact our ability to offer affordable unlimited data. In order to protect all T-Mobile customers, we will be reaching out to these people to educate them on our terms and conditions of service, but if the misuse continues, they could have their data speeds reduced for the remainder of their billing cycle.

Those who have used MVNOs are no strangers to data throttling, but if you’re a power user on T-Mobile’s network, you may want practice some data temperance come the 17th.

Geeze people need to calm down. They're not going to throttle people for using 150gb of data or without personally warning you. They're going to contact the top 20 and give them a warning.
