Turn your MacBook trackpad into a drawing tablet with the SonarPen stylus

Last year, the SonarPen 2 launched as the most affordable iPad stylus that supports pressure sensitivity. Now the company is back with an interesting new twist – the SonarPen Driver turns your MacBook’s trackpad into a drawing tablet.

Trackpads on Apple laptops are quite large these days, making this a viable idea. It’s not as comfortable as a traditional drawing tablet, but it’s cheaper and more portable – the SonarPen for USB-C costs $43 and you can tuck it into your MacBook bag.

The stylus works with a new driver for macOS 11 or later. Previously, it supported iPads, Androids, Chromebooks and even the Nintendo Switch, so you may already have one. Note that this also works with the original SonarPen 3.5mm headphone jack version from 2018, but you will need an adapter ($9.45).

Anyway, the SonarPen has been tested with Adobe Photoshop, Krita, GIMP, Clip Studio Paint, Artrage, MediBang Paint Pro and other apps (you can find the full list of apps here). It has a shortcut button and customizable pressure sensitivity.
