vivo V40 in for review

The vivo V40 is already selling in Europe, and we finally have a unit with us to review. The phone has a lot in common with its six-month-old predecessor, but upgrades to a 5,500 mAh battery and brings a camera infused with know-how from Zeiss.

The vivo V40 we have is the Nebula Purple version, which feels nice in the hand. However, we were disappointed to find there's no charger in the retail box. So if you want to take advantage of the phone's 80W wired charging, you have to supply the required one on your own.

The V40's design is bound to be polarizing with its unusual camera island. The same goes for the unusual finish of the back that feels halfway between sand and satin.

Upfront is a lovely 6.78” AMOLED with curved sides. In a world of flat frames and panels, curved screen fans don't have that many options these days, so they should appreciate this one.

The 120 Hz display looks bright, but the 4,500 nits quoted in the official specs are likely not actually achivable in real life - we'll certainly check about that. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset is seemingly doing a great job and the phone feels very responsive in these early minutes.

The vivo V40 has two 50 MP cameras on the back - a main one with a 1/1.56" sensor and an ultrawide unit with 1/2.76 imager. We'll know how they perform once we finish the review.

The Aura Light is a trademark feature of the series at this point, though we'll have to see if the new camera island shape affects its performance.

The vivo V40 starts at €500 and its hardware seems well fitting for the price point. We'll have to wait and see if its real-life performance matches it as well though.
