Vizio P-Series TVs replace your remote with an Android tablet

Vizio has released a new series of smart televisions, called the P-Series. The company has worked with Google to make perhaps the most unique range of televisions on the market.

The P-Series TVs might be called smart TVs but technically they are about as smart as a monitor and are nothing other than a big 4K screen to view your content. All the magic happens on the Android tablet that comes with the TV.

The P-Series does away with a traditional remote, and instead relies on the supplied tablet. The tablet has a 6-inch 1080p display and runs a stock version of Android with Vizio SmartCast app on top. It's through the app that you control everything on the television. The tablet and the TV are connected over a wireless network, and there is no IR blaster on the tablet. Vizio does supply a very basic IR remote in the packaging, however, but it's not supposed to be your main remote.

The tablet and TV connect over Google Cast, which is where the partnership with Google comes into play. The television itself has no interface of its own and everything has to be controlled and adjusted through the tablet remote. Through the tablet, you can also cast any content on to your TV. Whether it's from the SmartCast app, or from other apps such as Netflix. And if you don't want to use the TV, you can just watch it on the remote, since it is a fully functional Android tablet. The tablet remote comes with its own wireless charging dock.

The TV has a 4K panel and Dolby Vision HDR support with full array LED backlighting and 128 active LED zones that adjust intensity across the panel depending upon the content. You can connect other devices through HDMI to the TV but there is no tuner built-in.

Prices start at $1299 for the 55-inch model and go up to $3799 for the 75-inch model.
