Vote for Phablet of the Year 2015

George, 27 December, 2015

Time for the big guns to battle it out - after we pitted the more compact top-end offerings against each other last week, it's now the phablets' turn. Large diagonals are the norm in this category, though some of the contestants are “only” 5.5 inches – but who are we to judge a manufacturer’s decision to have its largest phablet be the size of another’s phone?

Samsung snatched the title in the Phone category with the Galaxy S6 and joins the Phablet race with the Galaxy Note5 – the fifth generation of the lineup that introduced us to the concept of a phablet in the first place. Archrival Apple iPhone 6s Plus is here too, only a second installment in a segment the company long refused to participate in.

The LG V10 packs a number of exclusive features, like extensive manual camera controls and a ticker display, while this year’s better Nexus, the 6P, has the largest camera pixels in the business. The Lumia 950 XL is Microsoft's long-overdue return to the top shelf, Continuum and all, while the Moto X Style is the most customizable flagship, easy on the wallet too.

The Meizu Pro 5 borrows Samsung’s top-class chipset and pairs it with a 1080p display for a change, while the Xperia Z5 Premium has 4 times as many pixels. The self-proclaimed 2016 flagship killer OnePlus 2 is a crowd favorite, while the more obscure One E9+ is as good as HTC has to offer in the phablet realm.

Even if it came out in 2014, the Galaxy Note 4 deserves to be on that list, because the Note 5 is just awful. I would never vote for it. Needless to say I'd never buy it either.
