Wakeout is Apple’s best iPhone app of 2020, Zoom takes the win on iPad
The end of 2020 is nearing and Apple has just announced its 15 best apps and games and several categories. The “iPhone App of the Year” award goes to Wakeout - a platform helping all the people confined at their home stay active. Working and studying from home also brought an award - to Zoom for “iPad App of the Year”.
In the Games category Genshin Impact from miHoYo became “iPhone Game of the Year”, while Riot’s Legends of Runeterra took the prize in the iPad store section. Another category is Apple TV, where Disney+ took the prize for best app, while Dandara Trials of Fear was the best game.
Apple also highlighted some app trends for the past year. Developers overwhelmingly went towards wellness apps, with Shine aimed at mental health. Explain Everything Whiteboard was a tool for teachers to “reinvent the classroom experience” - it is a cloud-based collaboration tool where groups of students can work together on projects even when everyone’s at home.
Pokemon Go saw a surge in use when people were having their daily outings, while the ShareTheMeal app by the United Nations World Food Programme brought 87 million meals to kids across the world.
To commemorate these accomplishments, for the first time Apple brought a physical award, inspired by the App Store icon. It has the logo on the front, engraving of the name of the winner on the back, and Apple said it is made of 100% recycled aluminum.
