Week 17 in review: Samsung delays the Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7/7 Pro are coming

Ivan, 28 April 2019

Week 17 was circled on many a calendar because it was the week when you could pre-order a foldable phone for the first time (while in the US you could even have received one). Samsung's Galaxy Fold was finally coming but sadly due to some issues with the early devices Samsung decided to delay the release of the foldable phone until those issues are dealt with.

It's a smart move, despite the outcry it faced. Samsung doesn't want another recall like the infamous Galaxy Note7 one so it's pulling back the Galaxy Fold before it gets into consumer hands. Hopefully it will be released soon and without issues.

OnePlus announced that it will reveal the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro to the World on May 14. The maker confirmed that the OnePlus 7 Pro will have a breakthrough screen and 5G, and teased its triple camera. We learned that the OnePlus 7 Pro will be priced north of €700.

Lenovo's new flagship came this week - the Z6 Pro packs a 6.39-inch Super AMOLED, in-display fingerprint, a pro-grade 48MP regular, 16MP ultra-wide and 8MP telephoto camera combination, Snapdragon 855 with as much as 12GB of RAM and a 4,000mAh battery. A day after its announcement the Lenovo Z6 Pro had already ushered-in 200k registrations.

Meizu unveiled a phone built on a similar blueprint - the Meizu 16s has a 6.2-inch AMOLED, in-display fingerprint scanner, a 48MP regular + 20MP telephoto camera, Snapdragon 855 with 8GB of RAM and a 3,600mAh battery.

Xiaomi unveiled the Redmi Y3 at the Redmi 7 announcement for India. The highlight of the Redmi Y3 is the 32MP selfie camera.

Meanwhile we saw the first CAD-based renders of the next iPhone flagship, giving some polish to recent leaks and rumors. The iPhone XI will likely have a big camera bump on the back but it will be justified by a regular, telephoto and new ultra-wide angle camera. In other Apple-related news the iPhone XR was the best-selling phone in the US for the entire Q2 of this year.

That's it for week 17 - see you in seven days!
