Week 46 in review: The foldable Motorola Razr debuts

Ivan, 17 November 2019

This was a rarely good week for tech news. The biggest one by far was the return of the Motorola Razr - this time in the high-tech foldable form. The Razr pays homage to the original Razr V3 looks but unfolds into a 6.2-inch Flex View screen instead of a 2.2-inch screen and keyboard.

The main display is a 21:9 pOLED with a resolution of 2142x876px, while on the outside the clamshell has a 2.7-inch OLED of 600x800px resolution. The new Razr will cost $1,500 when it launches as a Verizon exclusive.

We also saw the first images of Sony's Xperia 3. The photos show a slightly arched rear panel and a flat front one. We expect Sony's future ace to have a Snapdragon 865 and possibly an OLED with 90Hz refresh rate. However we are wondering whatever happened to the Xperia 2?

Speaking of the Snapdragon 865, the next version of Qualcomm's flagship processor became a bit clearer this week. According to a leak from China the Snapdragon 865 will bring a 20% CPU and GPU boost over the Snapdragon 855+.

Samsung patented another brand name for its industry-leading OLED panels - SAMOLED. The renamed panel is expected to make its first big debut on the Samsung Galaxy S11, due in early 2020. Speaking of the S11, it will be offered in Black, Grey an Blue, while the S11e will carry a Pink option

Speaking of OLEDs, a Xiaomi exec confirmed that the Mi Note 10's screen was made by Visonox.

HTC returned to phone announcements for the Desire 19s. It's a midrange affair with a triple camera, Helio P22 chip and a $195 price.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 showed its face thanks to renders and passed a Wi-Fi certification. It will have a quad camera and a big screen with tiny bezels and a single in-display camera.

A big if not quite phone-related story from this week was the debut of the brand new 16-inch MacBook Pro. Similarly, we learned that Nokia is entering the smart TV market with a 55-inch 4K set that will be made in and for the Indian market. When ready, the TV will be a Flipkart exclusive.

These were the major stories for the week. Check back in here in seven days!
