Weekly poll results: higher prices and limited availability are hurting the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro

Google launched the Pixel 8 series at a higher price point than the 7-series and that was a major factor in how people voted in last week’s poll. Almost four in ten voters think that the Pixel 8 Pro is too expensive for what it offers, even with its new exclusive features.

But there is a hurdle that comes before you can reach the “buy” button – the Google Store sells Pixels in only a few countries. Google has been slowly improving on that front, the Pixel 6 series launched in 9 countries, then the Pixel 7 series was available in 17 countries and now the 2023 models are available in 20 countries. That still leaves many would-be buyers with no option but to import and hope for the best.

Back to the price, $1,000/€1,100/₹107,000 is a lot to invest in a phone, so many are holding off until reviews show that the Pixel 8 Pro is worthy of its price tag. Sure, Google is promising 7 years of updates, so the cost can be spread out over a longer period of time.

But people have their doubts, especially surrounding the Tensor G3 chipset. Is it as good as Google says it is? Or will become unusable before the 7 year support period is over? We will do a full battery of tests soon and will have a better idea of what the future may hold.

Of course, the prices of Pixel phones tend to fall pretty quickly, so that was another reason to hold off from buying on launch day (which was this Thursday). But there’s yet another reason too.

And that affects the Google Pixel 8 a lot more – most people who are interested in this class of phone are just waiting for the Pixel 8a to arrive. That’s a compliment to the Pixel 7a, which was so good that it surely cannibalized some sales of the pricier phone.

Google must have learned its lesson. First, the Pixel 8 costs more than its predecessor, leaving a gap for the 8a to slot into. Second, we’re hearing that some features will be dialed back (e.g. the Tensor G3 may be under clocked) to give people more of a reason to pick the pricier Pixel 8 over the a-phone.

Google finally got the Pixel phones on the right track – this year sales grew in US and Japan, for example, two well-off markets. And the promise of 7 years of support has put pressure on other makers to improve their own support. Now if only it could find a way to expand availability faster, that would be great.

Exactly. There is no point of buying pixel for the same price of galaxy ultra when pixels have questionable quality issues in the past.

pixel 8 pro had 200 euros price increase compared to 7 pro. It makes zero sense. s23 ultra is only 60 euros more expensive than pixel 8 pro with the same storage (256gb).
