Weekly poll results: wide cameras still beat telephoto ones as monochrome ones fade

Ro, 15 July 2018

It's time to tally the votes from last week's poll results about the ideal secondary cameras on the back. What you prefer to have on your modern smartphones and how the trend has changed over the course of the year since we asked the same question last.

We see a close battle between two sensors, but this time around, monochrome has fallen out of fashion. It's clear that OEMs can achieve excellent low-light performance without needing a monochrome sensor so it was understandably lost popularity. This probably also explains why the "advanced sensor" option was so popular.

Even the Huawei's P20 Pro excellent night photography skills don't depend entirely on the monochrome sensor and instead rely mostly on their Quad Bayer technology and software magic.

In more conventional secondary cam types, wide-angle and telephoto are basically tied, suggesting increasing popularity for zoom lenses over the past year.

Given the close results, we can safely assume that the perfect combination would be a triple cam setup with one main camera with good low-light capabilities, a wide-angle and a telephoto lens.

You know, I can design and make the smartphone. My limitation is that of money, time, and resources. If the likes of Xiaomi would hire me as an intern or consultant to push out a small batch (100 devices), we could craft the prototypes without much...

Hmm, I suppose a start-up company like Light would be able to pull it off. Light already charges hard. At least they can make the phone stand or this way
