Weekly poll: Xiaomi Mi A2, hot or not?

Peter, 27 April 2018

The pure Android movement is picking up speed and when combined with mid-range hardware, it has the potential for great mainstream phones. Like the Xiaomi Mi A2), the second Android One phone by the company.

It expands the screen vertically – from 5.5” 16:9 to 6” 18:9 – in virtually the same body. And it upgrades to a Snapdragon 660 chipset, which offers the added power of four Kryo 260 cores. Options with more RAM and more storage is available as well, though if budget is a concern, then the microSD slot will be the preferred way to get more storage.

Compared to its predecessor, the Mi A2 also has better cameras. The big news is the selfie cam, which leapt up from 5 MP in the original to 20 MP. The rear camera was improved as well, the main sensor got a brighter aperture (f/2.2 to f/1.8) and the secondary sensor has higher resolution (12 MP to 20 MP).

The bad news is that Xiaomi decided to drop the 3.5 mm headphone jack and use USB-C headphones instead, but that is fairly common among phones these days.

Are focusing too much on comparing the Xiaomi Mi A2 against its predecessor? Perhaps, but looking to other Snapdragon 660 devices shows that competition is slim in the €250 price segment. Especially if you insist on clean Android.

The Mi A2 does have an issue, though, availability. It already launched in China as the Mi 6X (running MIUI), but availability in the West is spotty. Still, Xiaomi has opened several stores in Europe so that issue should soon be resolved. When that’s done, would you buy one?

No 3.5 Jack, and clean android looks awful. Otherwise price is amazing for offered hardware again it is Chinese brand, so risky as usual
