Anonymous, 29 Jan 2024The Xiaomi 14 Pro uses the Samsung JN1 for its tele camera.... moreOh, now I understand. In the image, 1/4 of the pixels are autofocus pixels, but only 1/16 of the pixels are autofocus pixels. So this array is only applied to 1/4 of the sensor area. So, 53% of the pixels might be green instead of 50%. I wonder how the binning works in this area.

The Xiaomi 14 Pro uses the Samsung JN1 for its tele camera. What's interesting about the Samsung JN1 is that it doesn't seem to use a Quad Bayer/Tetrapixel color filter array, even though Samsung writes Tetrapixel on its website. On its website, Samsung has posted an image of the color filter array with its Double Super PD and Samsung writes that 1/16 of the pixels are autofocus pixels. So, when you look at Samsung's image at image.semiconductor.samsung.com/image/samsung/p5/semiconductor/minisite/isocell/hero_pd/isocell-jn1/isocell-jn1-p05-m_2.png
, it seems that this sensor has 50% less blue pixels than Quad Bayer sensors. 62.5% of the pixels seem to be green, usually it's 50%.
Or maybe the image is just wrong.

One of the consequences that hasn't been relevant as much up until now is the requirement for U.S. investors in the company to divest their holdings in the company.
Xiaomi is blacklisted by the US government, as well as many other Chinese companies

The tele camera is actually a 50 megapixel 67mm camera.
Nonetheless, it is impressive that they achieved a focal length of 10.1mm without periscope technology. I don't know whether they will use the full resolution for a better quality at 2x75mm=150mm, but the Xiaomi 13 Pro offered to save 50 megapixel photos without binning. Theoretically, then you could maybe get more detail from objects than with a Huawei P30 Pro. Theoretically, it could even outperform the iPhone 15 Pro Max due to more pixels per angle, though the color filter array is worse.

75mm (telephoto) is too short. Camera modules with 120mm to 240mm telephoto prime lenses were introduced by Xiaomi almost half a decade ago.

When the MI Mix 4 didn't debut here in the US, I was absolutely heartbroken, if the 14 Pro or Ultra 1TB variant doesn't make it here, I'll never look in Xiaomi's direction again. Not like they care though, they make loads in China.
