Xiaomi 15T review
Android 15 and HyperOS 2
The Xiaomi 15T runs Android 15, augmented by the company's latest HyperOS 2. Xiaomi has promised that four future OS releases will be supported on the phone, and it should be covered with security patches for a total of six years. This is actually the same software support the Xiaomi 15 Ultra gets.
As usual, there's some nice continuity between versions, and HyperOS 2 will be quite familiar if you've come across a HyperOS 1 device or a Xiaomi from the MIUI times. Naturally, there's some extra polish now, plus neat AI tricks, and Xiaomi claims under-the-hood optimizations as well.
Our Xiaomi 15T gives you the option for an app drawer, but you can also choose to have everything on the homescreens. Some software branches don't let you have the app drawer, but we appreciate seeing that option here. A third "light" UX option, which makes icons bigger and things a bit more accessible, is also available.
HyperOS 2 features separate Notification and Control Center pages, with no option for a unified interface for the two. The homescreens support apps and widgets, as well as two flavors of large folders. The -1 homescreen can only be accessed via Google Discover or App Vault by Xiaomi, which appears to be missing in this version of the OS.
Then there's the AI functionality, which is also well-represented on the Xiaomi 15T. Xiaomi seemingly didn't skimp in the AI department at all.
Sure enough, there's Google Gemini. You can ask Gemini a lot of stuff to do and even have entire conversations. You can also have it create images for you. Circle to Search is also available system-wide.

Beyond the generic Gemini features, there are numerous in-house AI capabilities. Xiaomi does a good job of organizing these in a menu in Settings for explanation purposes. You still need to access the features themselves through their respective apps and locations, but it is very convenient to have a central location where everything is nicely laid out.
The Notes app can transform text in many ways. You can do translation, proofreading, summary and AI layout. The gallery app can do object deletion as well as generation for the sake of background expansion and similar tasks. You can even generate a short video from a static image. The Recorder app can do automatic transcription with speaker detection and separation, and you can translate the transcriptions. You can enable system-wide AI subtitles for multimedia consumption. There is also an AI interpreter that can do both face-to-face translation and call translation.
The gallery features numerous AI-based image editing tools. There's an object/people remover, which allows you to remove reflections, perform content-aware expansion, or adjust the appearance of the sky in your shots.
It is worth noting that many of Xiaomi's AI features are still cloud-based. Xiaomi isn't charging for anything, at least for now.
Benchmarks and performance
Xiaomi opted for MediaTek chips for the Xiaomi 15T generation, specifically a Dimensity 9400+ for the Pro model and a Dimensity 8400 Ultra for the standard Xiaomi 15T. While not a chart-topping chip, the Dimensity 8400 Ultra still delivers impressive performance.
In the CPU department, the Dimensity 8400 Ultra features one prime Cortex-A725 core, clocked at up to 3.25 GHz, and three additional Cortex-A725 cores, operating at up to 3.0 GHz. Then there are four 2.1 GHz Cortex-A725 units.
Xiaomi pairs that with a Mali-G720 MC7 GPU. For memory, the Xiaomi 15T comes with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of non-expandable UFS 4.1 storage.
Examining benchmark results, it becomes clear that the Dimensity 8400 Ultra has ample performance to spare. Not nearly on the level of the Dimensity 9400+ inside the Xiaomi 15T Pro, nor the Snapdragon 8 Elite, of course, but pretty comparable to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, at least in the CPU department.
The Adreno 750 inside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, however, outpaces the Mali-G720 MC7 inside the Dimensity 8400 Ultra. Not by much, but still noticeable.
Thermal-throttling
The Xiaomi 15T handles the heat output of the Dimensity 8400 Ultra quite well. Sure, its surface gets pretty hot to the touch, but never quite uncomfortable to hold. All the while, heat is being drawn away from the chipset quite efficiently, as evidenced by the rather modest loss in peak performance over a long stress test.

Xiaomi official site confirms it has a hardware proximity sensor, though the review mentions otherwise, anyone else can confirm?
