Xiaomi Mi 9 is now receiving the MIUI 12.5 update based on Android 11

Vlad, 19 July 2021

Xiaomi is moving on ahead with its updates to MIUI 12.5, and the latest phone to be graced with this version of the skin is the Mi 9 in Europe. It's actually a double celebration for Mi 9 owners, because not only is the phone getting MIUI 12.5, but the underlying Android version has changed too, jumping from Android 10 to Android 11.

It's a big one, then, both figuratively and literally - the download is 2.4GB, so if you're on a capped data plan make sure you use Wi-Fi to grab it.

The new build is labeled MIUI V12.5.1.0.RFAEUXM, and as we mentioned already (and that "EU" in the name makes clear), this one is going out to Mi 9 units that were sold in European markets. As you can see from the changelog screenshots above, the build is labeled "Stable", but this doesn't necessarily mean that all Mi 9 units in the wild are getting it now, for Xiaomi loves to have a very small rollout initially, making sure there are no show-stopping bugs intervening.

If everything is good, then a wider rollout should follow in the coming weeks. Of course, if you have a Mi 9 bought from Europe, you can always keep checking manually, maybe you'll be among the lucky ones.

The changelog itself is basically the same as for every other MIUI 12.5 rollout, mentioning "20 times more rendering power" for the system, "custom device model adjustments" that should result in any phone becoming faster, and things such as "MIUI became lighter, faster, and more durable", whatever that means. You're also getting the June 2021 security patch level although it's probably going to be August by the time all Mi 9 units install this update - but that's just the sorry state of security updates in MIUI-land.

Finally, the Notes app is receiving a huge update in MIUI 12.5, with support for dynamic layouts, mind maps with complex structures, new tools for doodling and sketching, a new gesture shortcut, and support for excerpts.

The MIUI should be 12.5.1.0. It's one-year old now. If yours is even older, you may need to download the latest version to your phone and kick off the upgrade manually.

This rollout has never happened for Mi 9 users in France (Europe?). It is now April 20th!

I had the same problem. Now I have to use the Mi launcher with gesture support. Turned out that it is not that bad. Personally I think it is because of the Android 11 restriction.
