In many cases, not all admittedly, and the only real difference is the extra real estate at the top and bottom of the screen. This partly to compensate for the lack of phsyical buttons at the bottom of the screen and partly bragging rights for sales. So what does all this mean? If you take a 16:9 picture or video and display it on an old phone it will fill the screen and be the same size in some cases as newer phones that have bigger screens. The only real difference will be the black bars at the sides. Of couse we now also have the issues of notches and holes in the screens for selfie cameras too.

In terms of use the sound comes from all sides of the device in other words it will be like stereo speaker everywhere.

For a person that is still using 5 inch 16:9 150g phone any new phone is too big/heavy for comfortable use. Maybe one day phones will have 9-10 inch screens, I won't be surprised. Maybe one day you will be salty about phones being too big.

There're barely any compact phones left. Ok, if you want to compare it to biggest old phones, let's look at the weight:
Samsung Note 4 (2014): 176g
LG G Pro 2 (2014): 172g
Mi Mix Alpha (2019): 241g
Mi Mix is so much heavier. Anything "phone" that has bigger than 6.9 inch screen is a tablet. I don't care if some stupid aspect ratio like 10000:9 makes it holdable with one hand, still a tablet.
