1 year review for the poco m5s on android 13/miui 14
disclaimer: I'm low budget, and my previous phone was from 2016, idk how many of these points are the norm these days

cons:

-there are way too many 'recommendations'
when you first boot the phone, google already has some, but then xiaomi has their own ¨system apps¨ downloader which will also bother you for permissions, not to mention some of them will pester you up to 3 times about setting them up. a couple apps will not let you use them if you don't agree to privacy terms (a gallery app, of all things...) plus recently i got a notification telling me that i must agree to give exact location permission on every MI app startup, yeah no thanks.

-the biggest negative point IMO is that all videos you play on the phone have this 'filter' on them, even if you start ignoring it eventually
it makes them look awfull, i read its boosted contrast and over sharpening, and from what i gather this is because of cheap HW OVERLAY software, stolen explanation :
¨Without a hardware overlay every application that is displaying things on the screen will share video memory and will have to constantly check for collision and clipping to render a proper image, this can cost a lot of processing power. With a hardware overlay each application gets its own portion of video memory, getting rid of the need to check for collision and clipping.¨

You can dissable HW overlay on developer optiopns and videos will go back to looking normal again, the bad thing is that it aparently makes your phone consume more battery (i have not tested it myself) so you should turn it on and off everytime you watch a video, even worse yet is that this options resets on every phone restart. the only permanent fix to all this BS is rooting your phone and using HAXOR-magics(scripts)

-developer options turn off by themselves on each startup, that sucks

-the THEMES app keeps asking you for permission
on EVERY attemp to change your phone sounds, images and fonts. I recomend using it, customize your phone to your liking, and then diseabble all permissions to that blasted thing.

-the notification center/dropdown menu and the power-down menu do NOT show the semi-transparent/blurred BG
instead it shows an ugly solid gray, aparently xiaomi decided THAT feature consumes too much battery and left it like that
i heard theres a few ways to cincurvent it, but also havent tried them myself.

-i've noticed a couple of layout-visual glitches upon unblocking your screen, in whatsapp, the notification center, and one other on the main screen, they have nonly happened 10 times max in 1 year times. a little concerning at first but it only lasts a fraction of a second and is a very rare ocurrence

-when theres a drop-in notification and you try to open the notification center, it instead opens the app in a Floating Window.
whoever designed this and forced it ON, wasnt thinking about speed and productivity. FWs might be good for taking notes or other stuff, but not for replying to messages.

-there's something slightly off with the touchscreen inputs. very rarely, it reads diagonal & vertical inputs as an horizontal swipes. i turned on the ¨pointer location¨ and the input reading is fine, so its definitely a software calculation issue.

-the virtual proximity sensor is absolute ASS, at least when compared to a physicals one.
its a pain trying to listen to whatsapp voice notes, move your phone a bit too much and it will detect it as taking it away from your ear.

-the first few week it would get hot during regular use (vids, music, configs, etc) but then nothing after that. heavy games will get it hot and bothered, so keep in mind if live in a oven.

pros:

-it has taken quite a few falls (within the protector case) and neither the screen or the prtective film/glass glass it came with, have cracked
BUT, putting in my pocket along with my keys gave it a big but single scratch line, and 3 small bumps that filled with a bit of air under the film, nothing too bothersome

-the screen can get BRIGHT holy crap, even at noon.

-the camera is not the best thing ever, but its great, though the UI is a bit bloated for my tastes, and the 64mp mode isn't that good.

-the speaker is pretty DAMM good, but since i have big chunky hands i tend to block them when i hold the phone horizontally lol
the top speaker sounds noticeably weaker than the bottom one (workplace is full of flour, so it might be grime stuck in it) either way, quality of sound is pretty decent.

-xiaomi said it is getting the hyperOS 2 update sometime in 2025, but that was a while ago. but apparently you can get it on your own with the memeOS app, thou i cant personally vouch for its safety

others:
i got the blue model, the color is not as lite as is shown in the publicity pics, its more of a smoky blue, but the gloss effect makes it look real classy

despite the massive amount of cons vs pros, I'm pretty happy with this phone, its cheap, but its WAY better than anything else i found in its price range.

Alex, 10 Feb 2025the worst crime that this phone commits is to automatically... moreyeah it does that and its shitty

but you can disable it in dev settings, its called ´disable hw overlay´
BUT, it re-enables itself on startup.

Good phone, all daily tasks work well on this phone compared to other phones in its price range. 60Hz screen is not a problem because others with 120Hz aren't smooth at all. The only drawback is the software, sometimes it is glitchy for no reason. Also no HyperOS/Android 14, the latest update is MIUI v14.0.17 based on Android 13 released on December 2024

So, I just swapped my poco M5s to Redmi note 10 pro, for me it has the same performance, but RN10 pro has better image processing, the quality and stability of the camera is 🔥🔥🔥 much less noise in low light, stabilization is like having a gimbal, and have more features than poco M5s

OwoukoUrua, 13 Mar 2025Please does this phone have "split screen" and &q... moreYes it does, if the other apps doesn't support split screen you can enable it on developer options

Please does this phone have "split screen" and "floating windows"?

So far so good, I've been using this phone for 1 year now, I got 256gb variant which is good because I have so many files also for school, and now only have 15gb left, but still working great for eveday use. And also got very little amoled burn on status bar because I tried using it at highest brightness everyday, and I regret doing it lmao

the worst crime that this phone commits is to automatically over-sharpen and contrast-boost ALL videos that you play on the phone. As soon as the phone detects you're playing a video, whether it's locally on the phone or through a streaming app, it will instantly over-sharpen it and slap it with a heavy dose of contrast. The resultant image is nearly unwatchable and looks like a cheap LCD TV that has been over tuned to make it more appealing on the shop floor. And there is absolutely nothing you can do about it because it's permanently forced enabled across all apps.

I emailed the xiaomi service center if there would be any update, but sadly this is what they replied "We regret to inform you that your POCO M5s will no longer receive system updates." So don't expect it would wave a Hyper Os soon😞

Just bought it brand new couple days ago, 100€. So far so good. After deleting and or disabling bloatware it became snappy and responsive, it got upgraded overnight from andr 12 to 13, with the latest security patch (2024.09.01). I don't play mobile games at all, my must haves were - a good battery (amazing), a decent OLED display (it's alright), NFC (yes), stereo audio (yes). Plus this phone actually has it's necessities included, so you don't need to buy a case and a 25€ fast charger separately, AHEM.
I'm very content with it so far.
