4K Chromecast Ultra leaks in press renders ahead of next week's announcement

Vlad, 26 September 2016

Next Tuesday will be a very big day for Google, as the company is holding an event during which it's expected to unveil a lot of hardware - things such as two Pixel phones, Google Home (its Amazon Echo competitor), a new Wi-Fi router, a Daydream VR headset, as well as a new Chromecast.

The latter is pictured below in these just-leaked press renders. It will allegedly be called Chromecast Ultra, and will support 4K playback as well as HDR. The Ultra has been rumored to cost $69, effectively twice as much as last year's second-generation 1080p Chromecast. That model will remain on sale even after the Ultra launches, thankfully.

As you can see, there's no more Chrome branding on Google's new HDMI streaming dongle. Instead, we get the same "G" logo that will be seen on the back of both the Pixel and the Pixel XL handsets. This might mean that it won't even be called Chromecast - Pixelcast seems like a good alternative, especially given Google's newfound love for the "Pixel" moniker.
