Been using this for 5 years now, still a decent performer. Youtube 1080p 60 fps playback is buttery smooth. Great device to watch Twitch streams.
I can still play modern games like Hill Climbers Racing 2 without issues.

Have been this iPad for 4 years now still getting around 7-8h SOT
I want to upgrade but looking at the 9th gen iPad the battery seems to have shrinked.
It probably wouldn’t matter much but I obviously don’t want to upgrade just to get a worse experience.
What is the battery life of iPad 9
I could go for a week without charging this iPad when I first bought it

Perhaps the battery issue is something Apple has introduced themselves to make people abandon the old iPad and buy new ones.

It's because the iOS. Each update makes the power consumption higher and the battery life less. I just measured the battery capacity on my ipad with my USB charge meter and it shows it still has 8500mAh.

No significant battery drain is being observed. In fact my son is using this ipad on some games like genshin impact with its lowest setting.
