Apple struggling with weight and prescription lenses for Vision Pro

Ro, 09 October 2023

According to the latest newsletter from Mark Gurman, Apple is working tirelessly to address two big issues with its VR/AR headset, the Vision Pro. People who had the chance to play around with the Vision Pro complain about the weight as well as the device's incompatibility with different types of prescription glasses.

For the next-generation Vision Pro, Apple plans for a drastic reduction in size and improvement in efficiency, so it won't require such a big external battery pack. In fact, Apple initially planned to release the Vision Pro with a built-in battery, but due to the added weight, it went for an external battery source and a cable.

Apple is having trouble resolving the weight and lens issues with Vision Pro

In pursuit of making the Vision Pro lighter and more compact, the company had to make a huge trade-off with the lenses. There's simply not enough room for glasses inside the headset. One way to address this is to ship custom-tailored Vision Pros to users with the appropriate prescription lenses. This would make sharing the headset and reselling it impossible though.

Plus, the lens combinations are way too many for one OEM to handle and it will be a huge hassle for retail stores, which need to have every combination in stock. Additionally, Apple would have to become a health provider and obtain a license to sell the needed prescription lenses.

All in all, we are far from getting a second-generation Vision Pro, but the latest report gives us an insight on what to expect in the future from Appel's AR/VR division.
