Review of 9220 Vs 8520
Box: 9220 Box is more smaller than 8520. Indicates cost cutting effort.
Form Factor:
Slimmer than 8520 but has a sturdier back panel and locks well. I did use 8520 and back panel gets slightly loose after the device ages out but doesnt happen to all users. The difference is in the locking mechanism between the two handsets. Not much difference in panel quality between both the devices.
Keyboard: Typical BB QWERTY arrangement for both, but find 9220 more easier to type due to slightly increased space between placement of keys.
Display: Unable to find any significant differences for the naked eye. Only decimal level difference.
BB 9220 - 320 x 240 pixels, 2.44 inches (~164 ppi pixel density)
BB 8520 - 320 x 240 pixels, 2.46 inches (~163 ppi pixel density)
Sound: Same Sound Quality, but 8520 scores better. 8520 has higher volume and better adavantage when using the device in a noise polluted environment. 8520 also has dedicated music keys at the top panel which is missing in 9220. BB Music lovers to watch out when buying 9220. Not a big miss out for 9220 in my opinion.
Memory: 9220 scores. 8520 has 256mb onboard memory versus 9220 having 512mb onboard memory. Both 32 GB micro SD expandable. Additional onboard memory is always an advantage.
Connectivity:
Both devices ar only 2G. So no clear winner in this category
GPRS and EDGE is the same for both.
2.0 version bluetooth for 8520 versus 2.1 version for 9220, so unable to find any major difference.
Wi-Fi 802.11b/g for 8520 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for 9220. I had better & fatser WiFi experience in 9220.
USB interface same for both devices.
Lack of 3G in 9220 would be a disadvantage as one would expect to have 3G features for price of
Rs. 10,990. All other major brands provide 3G as standard option for their mobiles with same pricing.
Multimedia:
BB9220 has slightly more format compatibility for playing audio/video files but no major difference.
Camera is the same for both with 2 MP.
Other Features:
9220 has additonal features below
- Accelerometer, proximity, compass
- FM Radio
We can do without these addditonal features and get 8520 if you have constrained budget.
Battery:
One strong reason to buy 9220. There is definitely a significant difference in the Standby / Talktime but not as promised in the specifications, still better than 8520. 9220 Battery is huge in size compared to 8520 but thanks to BB designers, fits well even though 9220 being slimmer. Charger for 9220 looks very slim and the cable used is the same for connecting your USB and also charging via charger. A cost cutting effort.
Operating System:
The one and only genuine reason that seperates 9220 and 8520. OS 7.1 for 9220 really makes the difference versus OS 5.0 for 8520. OS 7.1 is faster, reliable, has enriched applications. GUI is also good in my opinion. Also its very responsive and theres no lag when operating the device.
My previous 8520 runinng on OS 5.0 had hanged up at times and had to physically remove the battery to reboot which i would say is a big pain for BB users.
Have not encountered this issue in 9220 till now.
OS 7.1 might be tough intially for some previous model BB users. once you have adapted well, user can feel the smooth operations.
Overall:
If BB 8520 is Maruti Suzuki 800 then BB 9220 is Maruti Suzuki Alto.
If one has to choose between the two, 9220 could win the race with just only a thin margin due to these major factors.

- Battery Life
- Better Wifi
People with a tight budget who like BB a lot, 8520 is still a very good option.

such a waste of money.... I guess RIM thinks we ppl r fool...
Think practicably... know you requirement, research the market & m sure u'd get a better fon than BB

Battery drains in each 6hrs need t... moreRight said buddy.. M using E5 for de last 6 months. got the device for Rs. 9400 (9220 costs 10500 :P)... I really love this phone and doubt about Nokia's battery life & along with it 3g, wifi... etc.. also Nokia store is increasing the apps continuously

Made of very cheap plastic. Curve 8520 feels sturdier and better. OS 7 looks good on 480x360, better on 640x480 and at its best on 480x800. But on 320x240 res of Curve 9220 it looks worst. Screen is dull, colours are washed and overall its a let down with 9220. FM radio is a good addition but does the battery last long enough to enjoy this feature. Price isn't justified either, should cost 20% cheaper. I personaly would prefer 8520 anytime.

can not find any Central Processing Unit in this phone. it doesn't have one or using low speed ancient CPU that makes RIM too affraid to publish the cpu spec ???

I bought a USA's "trash" a sprint 8530, for US$ 80 just for testing why our people love it, and I still don't understand why, nothing special, all BBM can do is replaceable by whatsapp or ym or viber.

Hey,only a fool person buy this cellphone,high cost but only 2G and 2MP,low spesification, i reccomended you all to buy SE xperia mini pro same price but high spesification. RIM JUST FOOLED US!!!

In this range nokia E5 rocks with 5mp camera with a auto focus flash and works without hanging with 3g support and battery 2days 24*7 net
Plz guys do go for this model it sucks and will suck ever. Don't go with this plz
