I regard the late 1990s as the Golden Age of GSM. Most of my experience is with TI Calypso phones from 2005 to 2007 timeframe, but seeking to enrich my knowledge of the golden past, I just now (2022) acquired an Ericsson I888 phone - and thankfully it came unlocked. It set me back a little over $400 (such a rarity after almost 25 y!), but I am quite happy that I got it. I am not even bothering with trying to get it live on T-Mobile USA (their not shut down yet GSM network) - that evil company does not deserve a phone like this - instead I brought it live on my own GSM network, as in my own BTS (base transceiver station, operating on a squatted frequency) driven by Osmocom CNI software, with a SIM card programmed and "issued" by me.
It has been my life-long goal over the past decade or so to design and build my own GSM/2G phone, and I am still working on it - but now I have this I888 as a goal reference, as a shining example of what a good phone should be like, something to aspire to in my own design. Of course those of us who truly love GSM/2G will probably soon need to form our own separate nation, with our own control over the radio spectrum within our own sovereign borders so we can continue to operate GSM/2G forever and ever, or at least until the Sun swells into a red giant and engulfs the Earth - but that's a subject for another day.

Heyyyyyy I bought it 1999 during my visit to friend in NY . I used it only for 2 weeks. I still keep as a great memory . it was a very nice handset. Its still look like a brand new one.

Absolutely awesome piece of engineering. I still have (and use) the original one I bought back in the late 90s. Wish there was a modern day quad-band equivalent, instead of being filled with features that no-one uses.

I owned this phone back in the early 2000's when most phones for the US market were only of the 1900Mhz type. Heavy as a brick and could easily double as a weapon, but I loved it. Lost it getting out of a cab one day and still miss it to this very day. Great phone for it's time...

This is my all time favourite phone (and note the date and the fact I own a T39 and have owned an 8890 in the past!!!)

lost antenna when it unscrewed, terrible connecter for the power charger- once you know which way to plug in, sometimes does not charge. Menus could be better, for the rest nice phone, good infrared, modem built in
